I am in Central IL where 2% store bought milk is less than $2 and our

farmer just raised his price to $4/gal....and I know we would still pay

$5/gal and we use about a gallon a day!!! (Yes, I am going to get my own

cow soon.....and cheesemaking will be a new hobby for me!!)

visiting this weekend, I asked what he charged for a gallon of raw

milk. They charge 4.00 per gallon. I did not inquirer about

So I thought I would ask everyone here to simply share where they are (as

in the state), if they are the farmer or the customer, what prices they

are currently charging/or paying. And please list the

products: eggs, milk, cream, butter, cheese (type) and of course

the unit. I know I have seen prices as high as 12.00 per gallon and

I have seen more than one customer comment about getting a ‘good deal’ at

6.00 dollars per gallon. And I’m wondering, how do you spread the

word and get more customers? They are in the Albany, Georgia area

and are currently milking three cows daily.

Wholesale prices are much different. I'm sure you know that.

I charge $3 per gallon for my labor as I have a cow share program and can't legally sell milk.

I charge $1.50 per doz. for eggs from free range chickens.

I've only sold a little cheese at $3.50 per lb. When I get more and have more to sell, I'll see what I do with that.

I don't sell butter, but sell cream for $3.00 a quart.

I'm in Idaho.

We started out with one cow for our family because we could not find forage only, no starch, organic, unpasteurized milk anywhere within 50 miles. Then people started coming and "taking" our milk and leaving donations. Mostly about $4 per gallon. We are now up to three cows and still have trouble keeping enough milk in our house for our 1 gallon per day usage. As of Feb 1, we will switch to a cowshare program and request expense reimbursement of $8 per gallon, which includes delivery. This will barely cover the time, investment, energy, etc to produce this milk the way we are doing it now. We get $2 per dozen for our organic certified, flax fed eggs.

I haven't priced milk is so long at the supermarket, I have no idea what it costs.

I had my milk/labor going for $2.50 for a long time, but my grain has gone up, my hay has gone up and I'm getting older (LOL), so I had to up it to $3 as well.

RE: Farmer/Customer/Prices

WOW! We're here in central Missouri, and store bought SKIM milk is $2.55 - $2.89 a gallon. Our farmer finally raised her prices to $3.00 a gallon...she was charging only $2.50. We usually go through about 10 gallon a week, so I can't wait for our goats to freshen! LOL

Wow, $10 a gallon!!! I'd be rich. I hear that's what they get for raw cow milk in CA. I think that's a bit high tho. I'd lose customers for sure.

RE: Farmer/Customer/Prices

Oh, and goat milk goes for around $10.00 a gallon (IF you can find it), and eggs are $2.00 a dozen. Occasionally you can find them for $1.50/dozen, but it's not on a "regular" basis. Ours never advertises. We found our farmer through word of mouth, by asking on a free on-line local classified site. But before the person who answered our want ad would tell us who and where they got their milk, they had to make sure we were not 'Big Brother'...luckily we had a mutual friend!

Mark McAfee - owner of Organic Pastures says that he sells half

gallon milk to the stores for something like $4 - the rest is the

markup that the stores feel that they can get for the milk. In some

stores it is used as the magnet that draws people into the store and

while they are there they buy other things as well. Here in Ashland,

OR (first store outside of Calif to sell it retail and it must be

marked " For Dog and Cat Use Only in Oregon " ) it is actually located

on the very bottom shelf, so it's not the magnet here (yet!) However

the OP butter is at eye level (well my eye level anyway). The OP

cheese is mingled in with all the other name brand and local

cheeses. The milk sold the first week I bought it for right around

$7 and then the next time I bought it, it was down about 50 cents

less.

I currently buy my Guernsey milk directly from the farm for $5 a

gallon, but the farmer said they may be going up to $6 soon. They

don't sell cream or butter, but they do sell pastured eggs for $2 a

dozen. She made some awesome cream cheese - I'll have to get the

recipe from her.

Let's see. We're in Washington state, near Seattle. The prices we

pay are:

$20 per one-time refundable deposit for each share in our cow-share.

The ongoing costs are approximately $7 a gal, depending on the

number of days in the month. The Jersey cow is fed organic alfalfa

hay, some organic grain and pastured most of the day. We get 4

gallons a week for our family of two adults and one teen and drive a

little over an hour each way to get the milk. Some people here drive

two hours each way to our farmer in order to get it.

We also buy pastured chicken eggs at the same farm for $3.50/doz.

Butter, yogurt and kefir I make from the cream, but I have seen

butter for sale at the farm for $11 a pound. We bough some raw milk

cheese there last week for $5.50 a pound (excellent!). Usually we

buy raw milk cheese produced by a larger commercial dairy at the

natural foods store for about the same price. I need to start making

that though, as soon as I figure out exactly how to get started. I

have made some 'farmer's cheese' that was pretty interesting, but no

substitute for cheddar.
