Why pasteurize the eggs? How do you pasteurize eggs and keep them raw? Not that I would want to do that, but since pasteurization is done at high heat, wouldn't this cook the eggs?

Re: What do I DO with all the Colostrum I'm Getting

Rhonda and all, One delicious use for the colostrum is to add it to a healing SMOOTHIE drink. Actually, the inspiration for this drink came from Jerry Brunetti who makes his own using specially-prepared hyperimmune colostrum (similar to Stoli Milk) for his own health. The basic recipe for the Fat Smoothie is as follows12 oz Raw Milk4 oz Raw Cream2-3 Raw Pastured Eggs2 tbsp Unrefined Virgin Coconut OilFruit of your choice, bananas, berries, peaches, or tropical fruitSpices of choice, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, cardamonOptions: Vanilla, Almond extract, ground flax seedWhen using the colostrum, substitute a portion of the milk for colostrumBlenderize for a few seconds and sip for breakfast. The remainder canbe bottled for enjoying later in the day for a snack or pick-me-up. This recipe has hundreds of variations and can be modified to taste. You can use frozen fruit but it's healthier if not drunk ice-cold. This is delicious and very filling, a breakfast meal that lasts many hours and you rarely tire of the flavor. Few meals are more nutritious than this combination especially with the colostrum. Will Winter in MinnesotaPLEASE BE KIND AND TRIM YOUR POSTS WHEN REPLYING!Visit our Raw Dairy Files for a wealth of information!http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RawDairy/files/

I'm a canine nutritionist. What's wrong with the dog? This will help, but mix it with some sticky brown rice and cottage cheese. The stock is too salty for sick dogs.

I was thinking about the first day's colostrum and yes, it has to be a bit less intense because the calf needs to be able to digest it and new born calves, like babies, have to get their systems ready to digest properly, so the first hour's milk (especially that first milk) is going to be a lot less thick. I always let the calf have the first day to themselves. Since they usually don't take all the teats and just stick to one teat or one side the first day, Margie and my other girls that I've had, are so engorged, I usually milk them out starting the second day. So, I usually don't get the first day's milk. But I remember when I had my daughter (who I didn't nurse), I was told the first day's milk would be very light and almost clear in some cases. A lot of times, the hospitals will give the babies purified water to get them going. At least back in the bad old days. My doctor wanted me to nurse. I'll never forget what he said...."You are as big as a goat". But, I had a c-section and was hurting too much. I was cut from the naval down, not those neat little bikini cuts they make now. Oh, is that too personal? Sorry.

Yes, if you can, get at least 1/2 gallon of the second's day colostrum. If I were you, I would just put your grains in some of the colostrum and not even bother with the store bought crap. You will have cream in it. I usually put it in the fridge before I freeze it and I can't believe how dark that cream is. And, IS IT THICK. One thing for sure, if you get the second or third days colostrum, you probably won't need to add any sweeting to the kefir. I was thinking of making butter out of it when Margie freshens in June. Has anyone ever made colostrum butter?

You can email me off group about the dog at tinybabe2@....

Re: What do I DO with all the Colostrum I'm Getting

> Bland and watery? Must be the very first colostrum. Margie's colostrum is extremely, almost sickly, sweet and extremely heavy. I freeze it for use when needed by me, friends or the animals. It's not only nutritious, it's the best immune building stuff you can get.> > I never thought of it, but I bet you could use it for kefir and yogurt.> > Let us know how it is in a day or so. Shouldn't be watery I don't think.> > K.C.I broke down and bought P/H milk now twice <cringe>, only because I HAVE to have my kefir! I am awaiting the fresh raw milk in a week or so. . . Everything I have ever read has said that drinking ice cold drinks, water, whatever, is actually good because it causes your body to burn more of the bad fat because your body has to work harder to heat it up. I've never had a problem drinking ice cold water every day during the summer and winter.

Re: What do I DO with all the Colostrum I'm Getting

About the only thing upon which all nutritionists agree is that anything consumed ICE COLD will wreak havoc with the digestion. This is particularly true of gulping gallons of ice water, ice tea or other iced drinks with your meal. Chewing ice cubes would probably be the worst. It knocks the acid-production, the enzyme-function, and causes a halt in production while the stomach and intestines warm everything up. The digestion of a meal consumed in that manner may not even happen at all. You might absorb the cheap and fattening calories but not any of the serious nutrients. You might get half-digested food particles which turn into allergins. Studies show that warming up leftovers, for example, is better than eating them cold, for one reason, it causes more salivary enzymes to be released. Europeans think we Americans are crazy with our habit of big ol' glasses filled with ice cubes and it's a struggle to get waiters to bring it to you in a restaurant over there. I will attest to the fact that it's a hard habit to break. And, yes, the smoothie is delicious cold, but you do eventually get used to eating and drinking foods and beverages at room temperature or warmer. Will in Minnesota PLEASE BE KIND AND TRIM YOUR POSTS WHEN REPLYING!Visit our Raw Dairy Files for a wealth of information!http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RawDairy/files/

K.C.,

Pastured eggs means the chickens were out on pasture, eating grass and

bugs, as God meant for chickens to do. Pastured is not pasteurized.

Heehee.

Re: What do I DO with all the Colostrum I'm Getting

Hiya Rhonda,I haven't been able to develop a taste for raw milk kefir as yet but absolutely love it made with colostrum. I'm lucky to have heaps in the freezer as I have a few Jersey cows.I had thought about the kefir butter too KC but was too busy on the farm to make it when I had the fresh colostrum. I bet it would be delicious!!I use colostrum in roux sauces i.e. cheese sauces for vegetables, macoroni, pasta and even in curries. Really you can use it as a replacement for milk in any recipe. It gives a creamier taste to most things and you will benefit from all the goodness in colostrum. You can make colostrum pudding which sounds similar to a baked egg custard done in the oven. I haven't made this yet either. I'll post the recipe tomorrow if you want it.CheersMidgeRiver View Heritage JerseysNZ> > RhondaPLEASE BE KIND AND TRIM YOUR POSTS WHEN REPLYING!Visit our Raw Dairy Files for a wealth of information!http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RawDairy/files/

I must have read that late at night when I'm totally brain dead. I just call it "free range chickens" as mine are. I agree, that's the best way and people have loved the eggs they have been buying from me since 1997.

Sorry to be such a DING DONG. Have to stop answering things late at night. (LOL)

Don't laugh! Article in the Feb 2005 Fine Cooking "Worry-free eggs - raw pasteurized eggs in the shells". Explains that supermarkets nationwide will be carrying a new product. They show a picture of a son's brand. "After undergoing A process that involves bathing the eggs in warm water (that's not hot enough to cook them ) for specific time periods, these raw eggs are as safe as pasteurized milk, according to the processor."

What a crock of S--T! Just another way to charge extra for a product that doesn't need to be touched. As safe as pasteurized milk? That kind of says it all (HA).
