Guest guest
, When I had Mom home with me, I gave her BeneFiber. I thought it worked outstandingly. However, once she went in to the nh, the doctor prescribed Metamucil. I also noticed on her chart an order for Milk of Magnesia. The BeneFiber doesn't change the consistancy of what ever you mix it in, hot or cold beverages. It also doesn't have any flavor. My personal feeling is that my Mom doesn't get enough fluid at the nh. I'm trying to remendied that, she now gets chocolate milk on her lunch and dinner tray, in addition to juice and her hot tea (which is her favorite). Hope some of this helps. Guest guest
Use prunes until " its " purple. :< That is the only thing that worked for us. btw: I hate prunes, myself, so it is tough to talk someone else into eating them! espositogelati wrote: >Dear group, >I was just wandering if anyone has any solutions to the problem >of 'constipation'that comes with this disease. >When mum was at home with us it was easier as I could give her lots >of fruit and fibre, but she is suffering so badly with it in the nh >and I would like to try and come up with something that I could >request they give her every day. Guest guest
Hi , I don't know about constipation that comes with the disease. But I do know a fair amt about it in general. If you can figure out the cause of the constipation and eliminate that, you may have a fighting chance. Many drugs that are anti-inflammatory or have pain killer qualities have side effects that can cause these problems. Also, some supplements such as iron can do this too.So you may want to check with the doc and see if any of her meds or vitamins could be the source of her trouble. If so, he may have a more natural suggestion like prune or pear juice. There are also lots of natural OTC remedies that may be helpful. Fibercon, Metamucil. Metamucil makes apple/cinnamon cookies that may help. Also, my doctor has suggested docusate sodium which you can by in it's generic form for a few bucks at walmart. The brand name is colace. It doesn't have any stimulants so it doesn't cause cramping, discomfort and surprises. I hope some of this helps. espositogelati wrote: > Dear group, > I was just wandering if anyone has any solutions to the problem > of 'constipation'that comes with this disease. > When mum was at home with us it was easier as I could give her lots > of fruit and fibre, but she is suffering so badly with it in the nh > and I would like to try and come up with something that I could > request they give her every day. Guest guest
my fil drinks prune juice every other day.. seems to help.. he has that problem also.. lindad delicate subject! Dear group, I was just wandering if anyone has any solutions to the problem of 'constipation'that comes with this disease. When mum was at home with us it was easier as I could give her lots of fruit and fibre, but she is suffering so badly with it in the nh and I would like to try and come up with something that I could request they give her every day. I know they give laxatives to the other LBD resident, but I am sure this is not a good solution. I would appreciate any advice anyone has. Guest guest
Hi . I was unaware that constipation comes with LBD. Not fun. Are they sure a medication isn't causing it? I have heard that some prune juice helps. Can the NH offer her some fruit there? I would also report this to the doctor and see what they can do for her. Good luck, delicate subject! This wouldn't surprise me at all. I also think most residents don't get enough exercise. Granted it's limited, but I like to see the homes that have a daily program. Little is better than nothing. , someone else wrote that meds can contribute to constipation, and this is so true. Metamucil once a day helps my husband, but he also attends an exercise class 3x/wk. Good that you are requesting additional fluids on your mom's tray. Please let us know if this does the trick - we are all going to face the problem at some time. BTW, my husband's former wonderful PCP made the comment once to the effect of " so what if it (Metamucil) becomes habit forming. They're not going to improve anyway and if this keeps them comfortable . . . " I realize not all would agree, but he was geriatric cert and very caring, and VERY reasonable. We'd also prefer Metamucil or Bene-Fiber to regular laxatives. Cheryl

Guest guest
: The medication, Sinemet, is really known to be very constipating. I handled it by giving my husband two FiberCon tablets a day - one in am and one in pm. I also added bran cereal to his morning cereal and tons of fruit and liquids. It really works.
