Guest guest
Hey, not to put a kink in the system, but my two are HFA and my husband has 3 siblings with BP, 2 with dyslexia and 1 has ADHD and BP. I have only one sibling and he is ADHD with dyslexia. For the record, my husband and I are NT. Now you are making me wonder if the HFA is the correct dx .... Kathy in SC RE: who's tired? Its interesting because researchers have found a gentic link between the two disorders. Those children and adults dx with aspergers vs autism seem to have bipolar family members. Also, the occurance of bipolar and aspergers happening together is very common. From: Maralee Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2003 8:21 PMTo: autism-aspergers Subject: Re: who's tired? I don't think bipolar is really part of asperger's, is it? I see them as two diagnoses. There is some overlap, but bipolar people have greater extremes in mood and aggression. Guest guest
My sons autistic label has gotten him MORE help than his bipolar label. His bipolar label is pretty much ignored and has gotten him NO treatment anywhere. This is very true. When I rec'd the Aspergers dx last summer, I had to fight with the school district to change the disability on his IEP from ED (emotional disturbed) to Autism. I had many battles to fight with them. Since he was in 8th grade last year, I wanted the label to be changed BEFORE he went into the high school district. It took them about 5 months to change, but they finally did. Guest guest
It could be both. My son has classic autistic features but also has classic bipolar features as well. I have however read articles of children being dx on the spectrum then as they got older getting that dx removed and labeled bipolar. Of course Ive read articles that say exactly the reverse has occured. If it runs through the family it wouldnt hurt to discuss it with his doc (therapist whomever you see). My sons autistic label has gotten him MORE help than his bipolar label. His bipolar label is pretty much ignored and has gotten him NO treatment anywhere. Everywhere we go they focus on the Asperger or Autistic labels he carries (yes, he carries both aspergers and autism as his disablity classifciations. One is by a doctor the other is by the school. The school labels all kids on the spectrum as Autistic, just thought I would clarify) TK Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
