We give him this enzyme everyday with each meal and snack...... 1

capsule......

We are working towards 100% GFCF - and this has helped us greatly. We can

tell when we forget to give the enzyme..... it really helps our son digest

food - he eats more at once - and doesn't snack all day. I guess by it

helping to digest the food properly - doesn't need to eat all

day....

For us the enzyme works.......

FYI:

If you live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Healthy Approach Market in

Colleyville carries Kirkman products.

500 State Highway 121

Colleyville, TX.

I found this out at a support group meeting.

No, Houston NI does not offer trials. If the Kirkman brand does not

work - try the Houstons. We did not see a difference with the

Kirkmans but I have heard the same for the Houston brand for other

kids. I would suggest reading the FILES section of the enzyme and

autism group at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/enzymesandautism

It is full of information (ideas on how to administer, how to get

them approved to administer at school, etc..). There are some

personal accounts too. I think the list is more Houston oriented

though -- but both products are similar. Both companies will talk to

you about them to help you get started correctly.

We did not try a deviation from the diet for 3 months but others have

done so sooner. It all depends on your child. One of the problems

with Houston enzymes is that you have to take at least 2 different

kinds. I have copied and pasted the information from their web site--

" They have four digestive support enzyme products. Peptizyde™ is a

multiple protease formulation to assist digestion of casein, gluten,

soy, corn, and other food proteins. It is one of the highest DPP IV

peptidase-containing products available. HN-Zyme Prime is a

formulation of ten enzymes to assist digestion of carbohydrates,

fats, starches, fibers and phenolic foods. No-Fenol is designed to

help assimilate phenolic foods. It is also helpful with vegetarian

diets. " ... If the regular Peptizyde does not work you can try AFP

Peptizyde™ -- " is the same high DPP IV formulation as original

Peptizyde™ except that papain has been removed and another protease

added. Same effective product but without the papain odor. Better for

those sensitive to fruit-based enzyme products. "

If you are truly GFCF then the Pep. should not be a big deal, BUT if

you are not, your child may go through withdrawals from the peptide

highs if you introduce a whole Pep capsule too soon. We started

small and worked our way up to 1 each of Pep and Zyme and 1/4 - 1/2

No Fenol a meal. We only give the ones that are designed for the food

I am serving. If I am giving fruit for a snack, I may only do some

of a No Fenol. If I am doing Ruffles potato chips I only do a Zyme

with a small dash of Pep. They only come in capsules but are easy to

open and reseal.

There are quiet a few people on this list who have tried enzymes and

may still be using them in case you want more opinions.

Hope the opinions help, Theresa

I would recommend trying a trial of the Kirkmans (they will send

you a trial amount for $3.00s so that you can see if this works). We

know families using Kirkman enzymes and families using Houston's

enzymes.

We have used both Kirkman's and Houston's. We are still using some of

Houston's, but have started a new kind with good results. Our son responded

very well to a Secretin study he was involved in. I then saw some enzyme

products that contain Pancreas enzymes. He showed a similar, but lesser,

effect that the Secretin gave. On these new enzymes he will get a little

flushing of his cheeks (like Secretin did) and better bowl movements. I am

sold on these things. There are quite a few companies that make them. What

we have now is Schiff Enzymall, which can be ordered from the Internet.

My son also showed digestion improvement while part of the secretin study.

His stomach is still so much better than it used to be. He did the study

about 18 mos ago and has mainted it. I am now considering the transdermal

secretin.
