Hello folks,

We just got two nubian does that have milk and are learning how to milk

them. I have been able to get milk twice a day, not without a lot of goaty

complaining. I have seen a lot of different advice as to the procedure of

santination though. I know that after the milk is in the clean bucket it

should be strained and chilled quickly. My question is what and how should

I clean the teats with before and after milking? I remember a reference

from someplace in the past that something is applied to the teat after

milking helps the orifice to close up and prevent mastitis. I don't want my

goats getting the dreaded mastitis, especially because I feel I might not

have enough experience to catch it early.

I'm probably the only person I know that uses moisturizing wash to clean the teats with (LOL).

You need to visit Hoagger Supply (for goats, but I have cattle and they had what I needed). I got their small milk strainer and filters and they work great. There are also recognized teat washes and teat dips. I not only use teat dip after each milking, but I have a homeopathic spray that has prevented mastitis now for 2 years. It gets pretty mucky out here in the winter till I can have someone come in with a tractor and clean things up. I also have a drying off homeopathic spray that works great. I get the sprays from New Zealand and with the rate of exchange they are not expensive at all and well worth the wait.

If you have a farm supply near you or a dairy supply place, you can get their teat dips and washes from them. A small bucket with hot water and any kind of liquid soap works great for a wash. You can even get the anti bacterial type. It's the dip after that is sooooo important.

Thank you for your response! Could you tell me the name of the homeopathic

sprays and where you order them from? I might join you in the moisturizing

wash idea.
