Phoebe

turned five this month. She has been in the PPCD program since age

three. It is a self contained classroom, but that has been the best thing

for her. They did join their peers for things like lunch, recess, and

art/music etc.

I kind

of assumed she would continue with this ppcd class as her homeroom and then

move on to join the pre-k or k class at certain times. But it seems that

she is done with the ppcd class all together. Apparently when they hit

age five, they are no longer eligible for the PPCD class. I hate that

because I loved the teachers and aids and was hoping they would be with her

throughout elementary school.

So

what happens next? Is she just going to be in the regular classroom?

I don’t see that working out for her because she is barely speaking real

words, and is more like a toddler in many aspects. We have not had our

IEP meeting yet and we have not scheduled it either, but I just wanted to hear

how it worked for other families. I think they are planning on finishing

her in the PPCD classroom until the summer.

It is

a very small district with only one elementary, one middle and one high school.

I think Phoebe is the only kid her age in this district.

Would

anyone be able to share your experience that might help shed some light on the

issue?
