Guest guest
Hi Robin, Case in point: I have a friend who had the Roux-en-Y about two years ago (maybe a little more). She lost around 50% of her excess weight, leaving her still morbidly obese (and she had her tummy tuck last year). I saw her last week, she has already regained a noticeable amount of weight! One of the things I found most daunting about having the RNY is the fact that weight regain after four years happens to so many people. The other thing that I am reaping the benefits of, now, postop 5 months is that I find it easy to eat, no vomiting problems (my RNY friend vomits everyday, more than once). I have lost 77 pounds, so far, and I eat what my family eats (paying close attention to protein consumption) but in smaller quantities. Some days I am more hungry than others, in other words, I feel more " normal. " (Many people would dispute whether I am " normal " in any way!) LOL Best wishes to you in making the decision that is right for you! Hugs and blessings, Ann

Here are a few reasons I feel that way and this is based on my 2-year fight with Kaiser and the research I've done on the internet. The RNY " success " rate is lower than the DS. While most RNY surgeons claim a better than 60% success rate, they base that on amount of excess weight lost during the initial two years. They do not take into account the 30 to 40 pounds of excess weight regained by the end of year four in a high number of patients. (Any weight loss surgery is considered successful if a patient looses 50% or more of their excess weight in the first two years.) By contract, most DS patients lose 75 to 80% of their excess weight in the first two years and KEEP IT OFF! RNY patients have a highly restricted diet, DS patients can eat normal food. RNY patients have a higher chance of adverse side effects and complications. RNY patients are subject to the " dumping syndrome. " DS patients face side effects and complications, but not as bad as those associated with the RNY. The list goes on, but Dr. K. has an excellent comparison table on his web site, www.gr-ds.com. You may also want to do to the duodenal switch zone and click on the reports and studies links. Read the report by Dr. Hess. Then go ahead and fight for the DS. I did for two years, then swicthed insurance rather than be forced to have the RNY. I've got my surgery date now and wish it were sooner. If you're in CA and need some help preparing appeals or finding out how to fight for the DS, let me know. I had the " misfortune " of being a federal employee, so I couldn't use the state system. You may have a better chance. Jerry

Guest guest
You said: The angry meltdowns, with threatening words & gestures are too familiar too. For a few years I could stay calm & handle them ok, quite often leaving the house for awhile. (I'm so glad the nearby & Noble stays open til 11pm so I have a quiet, calm place to go when I need to.) Now, though, I don't know, they seem to get to me more than they used to. He's twice as big as I am now, that's part of it, so the threatening behavior is more scary. Sometimes though lately I just think that I'm plain weary of dealing with these behaviors after so many years. I say: I can so relate to your sentiments. It does get OLD, doesn't it? That's why it is so important to take regular time away, somewhere, somehow. I LOVE going to work every day. But even every evening and weekend...is a lot of time to be constantly 'needed' which is what happens at my house. Beth is 14 but still wants my attention all the time..to take her shopping or to a movie or to Blockbuster or, or or....it's all about her, all the time. I'm waiting for SOME maturity to happen concerning that issue. Think there's a chance???? Toodles!>^..^<Maralee

Both kids have had much more action and activity than the last few, they've camped (twice), spent almost 2 wks with their Dad/cousins where they went swimming daily and road jet skis and we just survived the amusement park last wk. We still have one family camping trip planned, they're heading to private camp (alone) next week and my son still has a trip to a water slide park and amusement park with activities he's involved in. I swear this seems like the dumbest thing I could've ever done. What was I thinking? Plain old routine and swimming a couple times a week and an overnight friend 'seems' so much easier for all of us. Guest guest
Oh, Catie! I am so sorry. I am thankful that we have not had to deal with the poop (knock on wood), but I feel your frustration and wanning optimism. Here's to a better tomorrow!!! Amy > > So I am tired of poop! The second cleanup of the day and I am starting to see the wear on the cast, sweater, and me. I am eternally optimistic, but I am wearing of the optimism for the day. Who would think a Cast would be such a blessing and yet such a curse for all involved. I am ready for our week of normalcy! Thanks for listening.
