Guest guest
I have no idea what district you are in or your school policies. My school district has a " kaleidoscope " program to prevent a classroom full of non-verbal children. They open the ppcd classroom up to teacher's typically developing kids, (ages 3-5) and neighborhood typical kids (if there are not enough teachers' kids) and charge a nominal monthly fee to attend ppcd preschool. It's wildly popular. I would ask your school to implement such a program. Need Help Our son, Ethan was tested for the ppcd class last Friday. In a previous meeting they told us that the PPCD class was devoid of verbal children. Our developmental pediatrician told us that the best thing for Ethan would be to be around verbal children. They also told us that there was another autistic child in the PPCD classromm, but he was non-verbal and severely autistic. Ethan is high-functioning. When I took him for testing, of course, he did not do well. He was in a room with lots of toys and a stranger he had never been around before, so naturally she could not keep his attention. He wanted to check out all the neat stuff in the room. What made me mad was that the tester started saying, " Oh, I can see he is just like the other boy, and he needs just what they other boy needs. " My son is not " just like " anyone else. All children are unique. I have a meeting with the PPCD teacher on the sixth, and the ARD meeting is scheduled for the 16th. I taught in the public schools for many years, and I know first-hand how pretty screwed special needs kids can get by the system. I never planned to send Ethan to public school, but the private schools near here don't have any services for special kids at all. My thinking is this: let him go to PPCD where he can get some speech therapy, and I will be there for all meal times (since the head of the special ed department said, " Well, I suppose if someone slips him a little something it won't hurt. " I said, " Would you give a candy bar to a kid who is diabetic? " ) I will see to it that Ethan gets to spend some time in the pre-k class with verbal children, and then his dad and I will drill him at home and either find a private ABA therapist or learn to do this ourselves. Any advice you all could give me about which way to go would be appreciated. Ethan is very bright; he just can't talk very well, but his words are increasing, and he knows some signs. He is really good at home about following commands. Thanks, Haven Unlocking Autism www.UnlockingAutism.org Autism-Awareness-Action Worldwide internet group for parents who have a child with AUTISM. Guest guest
Opps. Forgot to add about the food issue. I pack breakfast, snack and lunch (yes, it's a major pain, but the behavior change is worth it)....and have personally instructed all classroom staff, nurse's office and all other paperwork that says my child is on a highly restricted, but medically necessary diet (if they balk, bring a doctor's note). The school knows my child may not eat any food unless I pack it. I've instructed staff that yes, sneaking a crumb off the floor or someone's snack at lunch is a no-no. We've also taught my child (who is high functioning) that she cannot eat a lot of things...because it makes her sick. She seems to understand. To keep life simple, I usually send a month or two's worth of " safe " snacks in sealed tupperwear-like containers in the classroom. They send empty containers home for refills and I return them back full the next day. It's no problem at all for the teachers. To keep my life simple, I have staff heat her food in a microwave when necessary. They've been wonderful. Need Help Our son, Ethan was tested for the ppcd class last Friday. Guest guest
Hi, It sounds like you are very thorough. I truly believe that most parents know what is best for their child if they are actively involved and caring - and it sounds like you are definitely that. If you think this will work, it might be worth it to try it out. I agree that you should supplement at home with play, ABA, AVB, Floortime, SonRise, ect.... If decide to try the district program just be sure to " pop " in and see how things are going. Coming from someone who has done what you are talking about, you have to stay on top of them. They may have good intentions but some of them just don't always " get it. " I agree that having your child around verbal children is important. The hard part about public school is that you cannot control what goes on there when you are not there in the class. You cannot control which children are placed in there after your child starts the program. You are not there to intervene if the teacher is gone to another child's ARD and the aide is in a bad mood - - or if there is a substitute. They play with play doh (has gluten-but you can always send your own and require they keep things clean), shaving cream, soap and toys that other kids touch (my son was always sick after going to school- he has immune issues). If your child is extremely sensitive to this, that is an issue. I would request to sit in on the speech therapy to see if it is worth it. My son's speech therapist was terrible. Most of the staff spoke to him as if he was totally dumb and they never requested that he use his words and such. He would come home lazy and grumpy. We just did not have the best experience but that doesn't mean that yours won't be great. If you can find a placement with children you want him to model, that would be good. You could bring in tapes of what your child can really do instead of their inappropriate evaluation. If you feel the suggested program is not appropriate, don't accept it. You can ask for an outside evaluation. We eventually have placed my son in a private regular program where we can control most everything (he is shadowed by one of us at all times). All of our kids are so different that they require different things. My son picked up terrible behaviors at PPCD and he was even mainstreamed for most his day (at age 3). Remember this is just one experience. There are families out there that have had good experiences - especially if they stayed on top of their program, required training for the teachers, and developed a good relationship with the school and district. Hang in there and keep up the good work. Theresa, SA > Our son, Ethan was tested for the ppcd class last Friday. Guest guest
Hi all I need some help, one of my teens now has hepatitis induced TPC. I have found cells of that name and I was sure it was Primary Cryoglobulinemia. In my search I have posted one file to the files that has info about both cryo and extra hepatitic manifestations of HCV. I will keep looking and will post anything I find that may be interesting or of educational value. If anyone know what tpc is exactly let me know by email at yahoo. ASAP as her mom is nervous and with only initails whe is getting more nervous. Margaret what your son and you also are feeling is grief, he is most likely just noticing every little thing at the moment that is normal. things will settle down and you two will get into a routine who knows yu may make each other stronger doing treatment together. My freinds ten yr old is having some problems stayng in school but he started treatment and school about the same time and if treatment settles down he should be doing pretty good by Fall the new treatment is not so up and down as the first stuff. You must remember tho that every ones's treatment is different we all have the same disease but not the same body makeup so we all feel things differently and no one is quite the same, so no matter what you hear may happen it may not either and so many now are tolerating the treatment very well with minimal sides. I am also still looking for great articles about pediatric informaation but they may go ahead and qualify him as an adult, and the real basic info is all the same. Remember there are programs available thru the drug manufacture to help with the cost too if you need it. so I will close for now and wish all my freinds/family a great weekend and great wishes to all.
