Hey Sparky... I have to say it was not something I was looking foreword to, but I am glad it has been done... well, once the results are in I will consider it done. You should look foreword to having it done! I really want to know what shape my liver is in, for better or worse. Yes, I will comfort you when your turn comes. Just remember, if a dingy ole llama mama can do it, so can you! (Yup Liz, lol)

(Ps, My own comment on a kitten = Randy, I don't think you can afford not to get one. You are in need of comfort and companionship, cats are especially good at this. You do need to feed a cat a quality cat food as their urinary tracts are more finicky than dogs, but a bag of Purina, for example, is not that much and will last one little kitty a long time. Think positive and just do it! I would sure be willing to send you a few $$ to help get you started... that is how important I think this would be for you! Think on it seriously... instead of finding reasons why not... think on how can I make this work!!!)

Glad you made it through okay! Remember this day so you can comfort me when they decide it's safe to do mine!

I personally prefer females cats or dogs by far, but the cost for spaying is higher than the cost of neutering a male. You know, you might keep your eye open in the paper for a cat that has been 'fixed' already, too. Kittens are great... definitely a barrel of laughs, but sometimes people will advertise an older cat that they just cannot keep anymore, for whatever reason. Lots of things to consider, but I am betting you will never regret adopting one. Oh... you might prefer a short hair, too... lots less fluff floating around.

If you need help, I think you know to holler!

I'll tell ya, I don't know how I'm gonna afford it but everybody seems to think it's such a good idea, if the landlord says it's okay, then I'll get me a little tigress! (is a female or a male better?)

Hi again Sparky, the cost is going to vary a lot depending on your area... it is $45 in my part of the world for spaying. You might try calling a shelter or rescue and tell them of your limited income and desire for a cat, or save $15 per month until you have what you need. You might try calling a few veterinarians to let them know what you will be looking for. But, don't rule out an older cat... you might even find one that is still fairly young but spayed already. Cats can be spayed as early as 3 or 4 months if I am remembering right.

As for cost... Hummm... I have so many critters around here it is hard for me to estimate the cost of feeding just one, but I will try. I feed my cats the expensive Iam's food (Purina is almost as good and almost half the cost). Around here a small bag goes for a little over $7... I am thinking that might last 3 months for one cat? I would think 2 months for sure, any one cat households out there? I guess I would estimate costs on the high side at maybe around $10 per month... that should include food, kitty litter, and those occasional irresistible toys.

Ok, it has been a very long day and I am feeling big time now. I promised the doc I would behave and I am trying... think I will shut this thing down and go cuddle my critters. Randy, I am glad you are thinking seriously about saving a critter, and that is exactly what you will be doing.

Sweet Dreams

Having one fixed would be the bigee for me but I would rather have a kitten to raise all my own that would be ALL mine, ya know? One thing I do know is that the males have a tendency to spray to mark their targets when they get older and that smells!

I guess I should tell everyone something....My last girlfriend, the one that threw me out when I was diagnosed made me put my little kitty, Bootsy outside because she could just swear (yeah, right!) that she could smell where he spayed around the house. He did okay for a week then he disappeared. About two weeks later the neighborhood kids came by and told me he was dead. He got attacked by dogs! It just tore me up! He was my only comfort I had after all my bad news. I totally blame her!!! I am very emotional, maybe too much so but I don't want to go through that again. Ya know? Anyways the cost is really gonna be a factor. How much can I expect to pay a month to care for one? (Including a hysterectomy)

OK - my two cents on the kitty debate- I have 3 of the monsters and love them to death the oldest one is 16 and I have had him sense he was 4 weeks old. Some times things are tight and they eat better than me but I don't know what I would do without them.

Cost is reasonable -- check around and there are low cost shot and spay/nuter clinics. Your local animal shelter is a good resource for that and to find help for other low cost necessities for them. And I don't know about any one else but I would be more than willing to help with food and costs if need be.
