Bush stated in his Veterans Day Proclamation, “We resolve that their sacrifices will always be remembered by a grateful Nation.” Today we honor the men and women who have bravely served our country, and acknowledge the contributions they have made to the security and safety of our nation. The Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) recognizes the distinguished service of veterans to our country. Under the leadership of Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, we are working to develop policies and practices that support the employment goals of all Americans with disabilities, including those of our veterans who have acquired disabilities during, or after, their military service. ODEP’s Employer Assistance & Recruiting Network (EARN) is a free service that connects employers looking for qualified employees with skilled job candidates. Our Job Accommodation Network (JAN) facilitates the employment and retention of workers with disabilities by providing employers, people with disabilities and their family members with the information they need on job accommodations, self-employment and small business opportunities. ODEP is also working with the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) on a program called REALifelines. This important initiative offers personalized, one-on-one support to service members who have been wounded in service to their country. As a subscriber to DisabilityInfo.gov you are aware of the many resources this Web site offers to promote the full participation of our citizens in their communities and in the workplace. DisabilityInfo.gov is a valuable interagency resource that also includes a great deal of information of specific interest to veterans with disabilities, including information on housing assistance, hiring preferences for veterans in Federal jobs and rehabilitation programs leading to employment. In honoring our veterans today, we are also mindful of the fact that they, and all our citizens with disabilities, represent a frequently untapped source of dedicated and skilled workers. It is in that spirit that we continue our work in developing policies and programs that support their goals of living full and independent lives as active participants in their communities and in the workforce. Sincerely, W. Roy Grizzard, Jr., Ed.D.
