It is very disappointing that the food industry can add MSG without clearly spelling it out. ****************** While I would agree that the food industry should be able to list MSG clearly on a label, there is no scientific evidence that MSG is harmful in any way, and there is no evidence that it is responsible for the " Chinese Food Syndrome " that some people talk about. In fact, this " syndrome " may be more due to the very high sodium content (~3500 mg or more) of many Chinese dishes. A good review paper on this can be found here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed & Cmd=ShowDetailView & TermToSear\ ch=16999713 & ordinalpos=1 & itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.\ Pubmed_RVDocSum On a side note, I see your a kitesurfer. Guest guest
Hi everyone. Thanks for all your help on my past cases, it is really appreciated! I have a case of MSG poisoning. My patient, who needs to travel to Japan on business and wants to live there again seems to be have big problems with the MSG. She had this problem when she returned to the states, also. She is back in Japan and eating means bloating up like an elephant and feeling like she will bust. I have her take buffered C which is available, now I am asking her to take vinegar and water to enhance her stomach acid before meals and find some acidophis to take if she can. I need your suggestions. This is a very serious reaction. Several hours after eating she had urinary urgency that is well, urgent. Definately an allergy symptom. Anyone got any ideas for now and later? Homeopahty is not really avaiable to her currently. I have advised acupucture. She had that last time living in Japan and says no help. I have had her drink her urine before and no help there either. OK, that is despiration but hey, gotta think out of the box. Guest guest
Hi ,B6 and msg. People who are especially troubled by msg are often b6 deficient. I just looked on line quickly under "b6 and msg" to make sure I was remembering correctly and would not lead you astray and sure enough came up with a website immediately : http://www.msgtruth.org/remedies.htm I do I know who has put up the info but you may find something there. They have some interesting comment about utilizing taurine to support wellbeing.Has she been or is she on birth control pills? They also deplete B6 (as well as folic acid) - doesn't need to be the case but would be an interesting connection. Please note, also, that I understand the foods sources are very different in Japan. There may be two different things going on. She may definitely be hyper sensitive to MSG, but she may also have picked up a parasite or unhealthy gut bugs in addition to this, hence trouble continues when she returns to US as well.Let us know,, Clnical Nutritionist, San Ramon, CA Hi everyone. Guest guest
Sowton, ND at CCNM conducted a proving of MSG in 2005 or so while I was a student there. He should have information about the proving and have the remedy as well. Worth a shot, though not classical prescribing, certainly. Guest guest
Hi LeniI did not know this about B6 and MSGDo you think this is correcting a methlylation defect that is affected by the MSG?Or a KPU problem?Or a serotonin/melatonin pathway disruption, since B6 is the essential cofactor there? Guest guest
and Unda Group,The correlation between B6 and MSG was a little clinical pearl someone taught me and I filed away mentally so that I could help clients who had that issue.I don't know what the biochemical pathways involved are. I'll leave that to good minds like yours (but would love to know once you have let ot percolate and it is clear to you). I would include Blaylock, MD's comments on MSG as he has had a lot to say about MSG in particular and its excitotoxic affect.
