Guest guest
My speech therapist mentioned this once to me. Her roomie from college works at a clinic in Dallas and alot of their patients receive it. Her friend says it really helps, but my therapist says she doesn't know what the statistics are on it. Hope that helps!! > Does anyone have an opinion about cranio-sacral therapy? My OT > recommended we see one. The waiting lists are quite long -- is it > popular in the US? Guest guest
I wasn't sure what it was so I had to do a search and read. I have never heard of it being used but then again we haven't been dealing with this stuff for long. Did she say why she thought he needed this therapy? Guest guest
http://www.thehealthoasis.net/craniosacral.html The above link is very useful. I have the book " CranioSacral Therapy " by Dr Upledger. We are huge supporters of CS therapy. My son was born with a slight mishapen forehead. We used CS therapy, taught to us by my mother-in-law who is an OTR, to reshape his forehead correctly. You can barely see the bump now, you actually have to stand over him and look down on him to notice it. It's all about pressure points and deep massage. Our 3 yr old Autistic/Sensory Integrative son loves it when I perform CS therapy on him. We have a special mat that we lay on the floor, I play a certain relaxation CD, I start his disco light, use aromatherapy and begin his CS therapy every other day. It's more like relaxation time with mommy :-) Some days, especially when his sinuses are bothering him, he will come to me and push his head into me or put my hands on his head, requesting CS therapy. I suggest you look into CS therapy and consider it. It is very natural and really seems to ease my son's anxiety. Good luck! Nikki > > Does anyone have an opinion about cranio-sacral therapy? Guest guest
I don't know if the list is long here in the U.S. but my son will start soon as one of my friends is anxious to start gaining experience in this, and now that she is finishing her chiropractor internship. I do a form of it on my son but I do not know if I am doing it right but he seems to enjoy it. A parent posted how to massage the head on one of the many e-groups that I belong to and I tried it and it was a hit w/my son. (I hope I have that right LOL). That means it is done by an osteopath. He was trained by The Cranial Academy. I think what he does is SIMILAR to cranial-sacral, not necessarily EXACTLY the same. If you go here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Autism-Mercury/files/HOW_TO_find_doctor and look for the section on " cranial sacral and cranial osteopathy " , there are links to 3 or 4 websites that list referrals for this sort of treatment (both CS and osteopaths). Any of these websites will also have information and articles about these types of manipulation. (BTW, it is VERY gentle.) I have read a number of posts about kids who have been helped a lot, but I don't have a story to offer myself. The general idea is that the skull can be stressed or shaped in ways that cause undue pressures on the head and the brain. The gentle manipulation is to correct that. I think it also involves the back/spine/sacrum. I don't feel I can really describe this very accurately. best wishes, Moria
