We have enjoyed working/talking with you in the past and hope for your help with a National autism Awareness Month. With April fast approaching, I wanted to take a moment to address Autism Awareness Day/Month.In conjunction with 2003 Autism Ambassador Tour and Campaigns in Iowa and national, Autism Awakening, ChildScreen Team, VOSI, Autism Help For You, and many other dedicated autism organizations, efforts and campaigns for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, these adhoc groups request April to be known as Autism Awareness month. These Autism Organizations working in conjunction for better legislation, treatment, therapy, and educational options to the United States and Worldwide; the goal is to bring Autism awareness to the forefront of our society with the ever-increasing numbers of diagnoses. LD Wedewer, US Autsim Ambassador accompanied by the Iowa and United States Autism Co-Ambassador Joyce Minor, will commence her third annual Autism Tour of the United States this will be commencing her goal of a year long tour visiting cities, Boards of Education Meetings, Meet with Legislators, hospitals, Autism Organizations, attending rallies, attending hearings, meeting with parents, sitting at round table discussions, and many more. The US Autism Ambassadors drove more then 60,000 miles last year for autism educating about issues surrounding autism while raising awareness of this medical disability leaving behind educational brochures and pamplets in hospitals, schools, and with the general public. We have and will continue to take a pragmatic and progressive approach on issues related to autism within our states land in our nation. We have had the distinct pleasure of meeting with you and sharing our views on autism and what we have learned over the past few years and continue to look forward to sharing what we will uncover in 2003. We are happy to announce that we have combined with many organizations and professionals around the world and some of the information and research we are getting back is proving to be invaluable and look forward to sharing it in the next congressional hearing in 2003. Where as the United States Autism Ambassadors, Autism Awakening, Autism In Focus, Autism Help for You, ChildScreen, VOSI, and many other groups in worldwide are working together for better services and resources for individuals with autism.Every day, there are babies born in the United States who will later be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Some we are finding are a result of aluminum and thimerosal poisoning. As a result of autism, an estimated 1.500,000 or more Americans have lost the ability to communicate and interact with others. Allowing over 8-10 million individuals directly affected by autism including parents, granparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and siblings.Today Autism Spectrum disorders is even more common then Downs syndrome, Diabetes, Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis, and many forms of childhood cancer. During the June and December 2002 Autism Congressional hearings we attended Center for Disease Control and Prevention testified and reported they found that autism spectrum disorder occurred in one in every 150 childrenCaring for people diagnosed with autism this year will rise to more than $18 billion per year, and the majority of these costs are borne by the families of the victims of autism. These parents have sacrificed tremendously to provide the specialized education and support services that their children need.Even sadder is the fact that that some of children around the world never receive the current diagnosis or support, and fall into the cracks. We should ensure we are leaving no child behind including those with autism. These children and families struggle for medical, education, therapy, and treatment for their loved ones. Several are foced to sell treasured items or morgage their homes. As a parent of an autistic child, I find myself advocating for all families so that they will never feel alone or not understand the Autistic Spectrum (including abilities and disabilities). The US Autism Ambassadors, Autism Awakening, many concerned parents and professionals will once again travel to Washington, DC in April 2003 for Autism Rallies, Events and more. This disability is not one that can be visually recognized or is fully understood, we want to change this... The Spectrum consists of all genders, races, creeds and does not discriminate against the wealthy or poor.2003 we will again take our platform statements and share vital new information on autism-related issues and new programs. I am once again requesting sponsorship of a National Resolution that would acknowledge April 2003, as Autism Awareness Month. Once again in April we will also request to fly two flags over the US Capitol in honor of those individuals with autism, their families, and the ongoing eforts of advocates around the United States..Peacefully,LD Wedewer, US & IA Autism AmbassadorMother of Child with autismAutism Awakening: www.AutismAwakening.com1900 K Street S.W.Cedar Rapids, IA 52404AutismAwakening@...Resident of IowaConstituentChildSceren Team MemberVOSI Publicity ChairCEDAR RAPIDS AUTISM MONTH PROCLAMATIONWHERAS, Autism is a severely incapacitating, lifelong disability, resulting in significant impairment of an individual's ability to learn, in developing healthy interactive behaviors, and understand verbal, nonverbal, and reciprocal communication; and,WHEREAS, Today Autism Spectrum disorders is even more common then Downs syndrome, Diabetes, Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis, and many forms of Childhood Cancer. and,WHEREAS, Every day, there are babies born in the United States who will later be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and as a result of autism, an estimated more then 1.500,000 or more Americans have lost the ability to communicate and interact with others; and,WHEREAS, The recently released Center for Disease Control and Prevention report found that autism spectrum disorder occurred in one in every 150 children, andWHEREAS.
