One thing that he does that I find curious is sniffing everything before he eats it (or doesn't most of the time).

OMG....my 13 yr old son has done that for as long as I can remember. We used to say he was part dog because of this.

Thanks for your reply Kim.

I am really battling with the gluten free diet. I think that I expected to see some improvement by now. It is such a pain to make sure that Kyson sticks to it. Kyson spends a bit of time with his grandfather which is great time out for my hubby and for me but he is pretty casual about what he gives him to eat. He will roughly peel the batter off fish and give him that, things along those lines. I could insist that he stay at home and not visit his grandfather but that would really upset both of them and cut out the little bit of time out that we get. It's a toughy.

A little background info might be in order. Kyson is five. He was diagnosed in Dec last year. His preschool teacher picked it up initially. I just thought that he was a bit excentric, overly fearful and just different than other kids his age. I put it down to him being born 9 years after my youngest daughter and being very spoilt.

He apparently has only mild Aspergers. I am doubtful about that at times. He has full on rage tantrums and has tried to hit me with a shovel and thrown a lump of wood at me, among other things. He really goes off and gets quite violent at times. He runs our household, or rather his moods do. Apart from that he shows most of the traits of a typical Aspergers child. I'm sure that you know all about that!!

One thing that he does that I find curious is sniffing everything before he eats it (or doesn't most of the time). He is so limited in what he will actually eat and unfortunately almost all of the foods that he will eat are either gluten or dairy type foods. I did read somewhere that they crave foods that they can't tolerate, typical heh?

I have raved on enough. You are doing well if you are still with me :)

I would be interested in hearing your story.

Debbie

Hi Debbie Reuben my 10 year old was diagnosed in dec 2000... mid jan I found a site telling about the g/f c/f (casin free) diet... well I just couldnt ignore it... I took him off all dairy... so he only has soy...then took him off all wheat!!!!

well he was on it for 3 weeks and it was the second week of school.... I thought heck this is working so just put a sandwich in for him for school...

well about 45mins after him eating he went off his tree... all the old behaviours... thru chairs choked a kid... kicked over desks and ran off!!!! well that was proof for me...

there have been times when he has had gluten either by mistake or on purpose by my ex... (long story of when we split up) and you can tell by his eyes... and becomes a lunatic!!!!

I only a allow a small amount of cheese in his diet and no milk...

He can have a few nugget if we go to macdonalds... but that is once a fortnight...

I have found that he only reacts to huge amounts of it... ie bread/batter etc the gluten in say bolonaise mixes dont effect him... he cant have spaghetti but there are alot of rice pastas out that dont taste too bad...

Email me anytime...

lolol I think it is a quirk. My son won't eat any sauces with lumps, no mashed potatoes and won't eat soup. He doesn't like red meat unless it is a hamburger that has been grilled. Chicken has to be crispy. lolol

Mashed potato is the only cooked vegie that Kyson will eat but not all the time. He loves red meat and soup and any sort of chicken. He only eats the same foods over and over. It drives me nuts, particularly when I cook something really yummy and he won't even try it. Obviously it doesn't smell right.

I know what you mean. It drives my dh nuts with Zach's food preferences. They butt heads over everything right now any way.

That drives my hubby nuts!! Not too mention the MIL as well. Zach, Ethann and all sniff their food.

Hi Debbie, he doesnt sound mild at all!!! and believe me I know about tantrums!!!! Reubens special ed teacher says he is the only one that she has seen the diet really work with... but hey Im sure there are more out there... I guess its like medication some work with some others not!!!! Its a trial and error thing... How long has he been on the diet? I always know when Reuben has had some gluten, his eyes glaze over and he's a different kid...

My advice is try everything...!!!

Make sure he is totally gluten for 6 - 8 months and then introduce a sandwich and see if there is a reaction... in a stressfull situation he will react one way or another...

Let me know how you go.

Thanks for the advice Kim. He has been on the diet for a month on Friday but I think that he has been getting gluten when he visits his pop. I'll let you know how it goes.
