Don't know about the school district. However, there is going to be a

hearing against a teacher in their behavior management class. It's ALL over

the media in the Austin area. He's accused of throwing a chair at a

student...a claim the teacher said never happened. Just fyi.

Pflugerville School district

I've heard that the Pflugerville school district was doing an ABA program.

Does anyone here have any experience with them? I met a mom at a cocktail

party who also has a son with autism. What a small world! She shared with me

that her son is in a classroom in Pflugerville that is doing ABA. I didn't

get to talk to her for long because she was actually one of the co hosts and

was busy trying to entertain. I've never heard of any other public schools

attempting this. I'm almost tempted to move out there! I wish I could

remember that mother's name! But I'm hoping someone here might know

something about this.

Thanks,

Lee

The teacher is a woman and if you read the article in today's paper they

stated the teacher uses math calculation sheets as punishment for off task

behavior - talk about teaching a kid to hate a subject...and the law does

require the use of " positive " behavioral supports - I guess worksheets,

shoving chairs and swiping all the materials off of a kid's desk is teaching

the kid - something - just not the things be should be learning.

Good ol' Pflugerville - the same district that hired a guy to teach them how

to taunt kids into behaving appropriately - boot camp techniques, dropping

books and other objects unexpectantly behind a kid and then punishing the

kid for being " off task " when the kid startled and turned to look at what

caused the disturbance, etc.

I would NEVER move to Pflugerville - one class that says they use a

technique means nothing. I have yet to hear of anything good coming from

this district.

I second what Ronnie says about Pflugerville. Our present Special Ed

director came from there and is hated here even more than she was there.

I agree this information is very scary. I searched your local paper

online for this information. Here is what I found.

Author: Janet s AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Date: 05-17-2002

Publication: The Austin American-Statesman Page Number: B1 Word

Count: 300 Size: 1K Relevancy: 81

PFLUGERVILLE -- The Pflugerville school board Thursday night proposed

firing a middle school teacher accused of throwing a chair at a

student during a behavior management class. Gaye Millegan, 37,

who has been with the district about four years,

I could not access the remainder of the story. It appears that you

have to pay for a subscription to view whole articles.

It is my understanding that the ABA class is in an elementary school,

and this occurred in a middle school. My information could be wrong,

but according to Ronnie, the ABA class is for early elementary

children. I certainly hope these are not related.

Once again, it would be nice to hear from someone with first-hand

information.

Trustees may fire accused teacher

By Janet s

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Friday, May 17, 2002

PFLUGERVILLE -- The Pflugerville school board Thursday night proposed firing

a middle school teacher accused of throwing a chair at a student during a

behavior management class.

Gaye Millegan, 37, who has been with the district about four years,

was charged with injury to a child, a state jail felony, on April 24.

The proposal to terminate Millegan will be challenged before an independent

hearing examiner appointed by the Texas Education Agency, said lawyer

Colvin, who is representing Millegan in the civil action.

" We believe the charges are unfounded, " she said. " We're very disappointed

the board is considering this action. Ms. Millegan is a dedicated and

talented teacher. "

The board unanimously approved the termination proposal after a 15-minute

closed session. There was no discussion.

Millegan is accused of throwing a chair at the 14-year-old boy on April 4,

hurting his knee, a contention Millegan has denied. She taught special

classes for students with behavioral and attention problems at Pflugerville

Middle School.

The teacher hasn't worked in the classroom since the district was informed

of the incident, said Cherry Porter, assistant superintendent of

Pflugerville schools. The district's records show Millegan was suspended

with pay on April 4.

The Pflugerville Police Department began investigating the same day, and the

case has been turned over to the County district attorney's office.

It could go to a grand jury within 30 days, said Dayna Blazey, assistant

district attorney.

Larry Sauer, the lawyer defending Millegan on the criminal charge, said the

teacher denies throwing the chair at the boy.

" As far as she knows, (the injury) didn't happen in her class, " Sauer said.

, 13, a seventh-grader who was in the classroom at the time,

said the incident happened after Millegan found the boy hiding in a

bathroom. Millegan threw all his materials off his desk and flung his chair

across the room, said.

" She was giving him more off-task sheets (math worksheets that serve as

punishment) and she yelled at him to sit down, and he said, 'I can't, I

don't have a chair,' and that's when she threw the yellow chair at him, "

said. " The chair she threw at him hit him in the knee. "

During the next period, after Millegan had left the room, the boy asked to

go to the nurse's office, complaining that his knee hurt. He didn't return

to the classroom that day, said.

Millegan previously taught in Round Rock and Manor. She has a bachelor of

science degree in physical education and is certified to teach special

education and physical education classes.

I found out today that the Pflugerville district does have a communication

classroom based on the Carbone method. It is for the early childhood program.

It is totally self contained. The kids get no inclusion with the regular ed

from the way it was described to me. So they do have the program it all

depends how you feel about inclusion too.
