Guest guest
We have had a lot of success with by taking him off all artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. We tried no sugar, but, to be honest, it made no difference with him. But, as seems to be the case with all AS kids, everyone is different and what works for one may not work for another. The colors and flavors, though, make a HUGE difference for him. We have been on this diet about a year now, and he does not even want stuff that is off his diet. We shop a lot at stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joes, however, there is a lot we can get at the regular grocery store, too. Last Halloween he wanted to have a piece of his trick or treat candy and I let him have 1 piece. That resulted in a 2 day temper tantrum that I thought none of us were going to survive!!!! After that, he has been absolutely faithful about sticking to his diet. He does not like what he becomes when he eats artificial junk. A funny thing, I have noticed with my class of kindergartners, when we have treats, the more artificial ingredients, the more hyper they are afterwards! We can bake homemade cookies, and the activity level will not go up. But, somebody brings in store bought cupcakes for a birthday...... Watch out!!! Those kids are bouncing off the walls 30 minutes later!! We are noticing a difference with milk products, though, and are considering taking off dairy. He had a bowl of ice cream the other night, and was " off " the next day. But, I don't really think it is the sugars. He ate a bunch of " JoJos " (all natural Oreos) and " Sundrops " (all natural M & Ms) the other day and was fine. Those both have a lot of sugar!!!!!
