Hello Carson -

I would hesitate to recommend a timeframe for you on cataract surgery before

deadlifting, I can only say the people I've talked to who have had eye surgery

for LASIX have gone back quicker than expected....1 here locally had his vision

done and was back lifting heavy within 2 weeks (I suspected it was quicker than

this but he wouldn't ADMIT IT). It barely interrupted his training as a PL.

But keep in mind he was young and perhaps headstrong vs medical

advice....<SIGH>. I would definitely talk to your eye care professional,

perhaps they have had other athletes under their care in the past?

Ok I miswrote on that statement, Carson - that I've " NEVER " heard of anyone

powerlifting without wanting to compete - I have a very good friend who I taught

to deadlift...she was good enough to compete PL, but she chose instead to go OL

and now is competing at the national and world level there!

What I SHOULD have said was that the number of " bodybuilders " would be legion IF

all persons claiming to be a BODYBUILDER actually DID compete bodybuilding. As

in if ALL those supposed bodybuilders actually got STAGE ready, not just

espoused what they believe to be bodybuilding in a far looser sense of the

word... You regularly run across herds of such persons! Yet I can name off the

4 actual COMPETING bodybuilders in the gyms I use regularly...vs the MANY more

who " claim " the sport. (Ok in SOME cases it's a guy who has just read his first

weider magazine and is doing 21's.....<rolling eyes> that's the flavor of the

month right now! and shaving his body out out of some warped sense of

bodybuilding requirement?)

The claimants of bodybuilding are also mostly MEN. Few seem to be claiming to

want to be that look the fbb are currently using as a standard by the way. i.e.

I have yet to run across someone who is NOT a competing fbb who is claiming to

be one - and I don't currently know any gals working toward their first bb show

by the way....and I regularly approach and encourage ANY gal I see trying to

lift seriously in gyms I go to! There are few actual competing fbb.

Far fewer people outside of competing powerlifters ARE " powerlifters " than claim

to be bodybuilders but never go on stage. You are clearly one of those and I

salute you for your choice to not compete, not all MUST compete, powerlifting

can serve us well off the platform as well as on! But you should know you

would be welcome, Carson, if you ever choose to compete.

When I took up training like a powerlifter a decade ago, it was ASSUMED

automatically I would go on the platform and I never questioned that, and I

quickly started competing..... People who have approached me for PL information

have all told me they were wanting to become competing PL, seeking a coach and

federation to do so!.....so it's far more rare NOT to compete than it is to

compete...whereas not all the myriad millions who buy bodybuilding mags and

appear to be doing those workouts and claim to BE bodybuilders are getting on

stage in their speedos!

I think the point which I miswrote really should be that there is a POPULAR

notion of bodybuilding, that many a person " claims " to be a " bodybuilder " in our

gyms, and walking about, yet is NOT a competing bodybuilder and would not really

wish to go there....that what is conventionally done by many is clearly NOT the

stage prepared bodybuilder, ripped, tanned, etc.

It is true that not ALL powerlifters choose to compete, but MOST DO (and ALL the

ones who claim PL in the gyms I use are competing PL by the way) therefore it's

much more rare to run into a person who does the full powerlifting lifestyle

really who does NOT wish to compete. Whereas one can easily point to any number

of " bodybuilders " on a regular basis, who clearly will not, and are possibly

clueless to the reality of what a stage bodybuilder IS and how to become one.

It simply is rare to run across a powerlifter who is not a competing or

previously competing PL. The same being the case mostly with OL too. Strongman

competitors too, highland games persons, the heavy strength sports simply do not

tend to have many people claiming to be one who well, aren't competing them.

Versus the popularity of bodybuilding and its majority of NON COMPETING PERSONS.

I hope you can return to deadlifting soon, Carson, and may you enjoy many more

years of powerlifting.

Deadlifting After Cataract Surgery?

Hi All

I've had cataract surgery recently. I'm interested to know who else out

there who lifts heavy has had such surgery and how long they waited before

doing heavy deadlifts?

I'll also take this opportunity to tell , I'm one of those odd

balls who lifts heavy to compete only against myself. had said in a

past post, she never heard of anyone powerlifting without wanting to

compete.
