Guest guest
My son who is 8 years old, with regressive autism, a history of colitis and LNH of the ileum, and on Step I of the Yasko protocol developed a horrible full body rash last night and this morning. This is a first ever rash he has ever had and he rarely gets sick. The only other rash he had was when he had a tummy rash of a totally different appearance when had at 3 yo when chelating with oral DMSA. That rash was fine; this one is blotchy and welty. I am wondering if Olive Leaf extract could be responsible. I gave him 1 OLE (a capsule of the Life Flo brand) and 1 Caprylic on Wednesday late afternoon. I noticed nothing that day. I gave him the same doses on Thursday afternoon. The OLE is new, the caprylic is not. On Thursday evening around 8 pm, I noticed a raised welty looking rash on his mid to lower back concentrated along his spine and spreading out more diffusely to his hips, torso, groin, and thighs. By morning he had a rash all over his entire body including face, arms, legs, neck and scalp. Most of it looks like hives, some looks like erythema mutiforme. The rash is itchy. He has no fever and though he is a little foggier today, he is still pretty active and up and about. His face and eyes appear a bit swollen today, and he complained about his eyes this morning. I took him to the pediatrician this morning who confirmed it was not chicken pox or roseola, and said it looked like hives and some spots of erythema multiforme. He said it could be caused form just about anything including an allergy to a food, environmental trigger, an antibiotic he just came off of, or a virus, etc. Basically he sent me home with directions to give benedryl as needed and to stop any possible provokers including herbs, novel supplements, or antibiotics. Some possibilities come to mind. just finished up a 2 week course of Septra (trimethoprim sulfamethaxazole) and had his last dose the day before the rash. He has seen Septra before several years ago and I noted neither rash then, nor any rash while he was on it this time (only good things behaviorally), but the pediatrician said it could still be a delayed reaction to the antibiotic. My thought is that perhaps the Septra brought his bacterial/protozoa load down enough that his body could mount an immune reaction to latent virus in his system, which was precipitated by OLE. Another possibility is that and some other children were rolling down a grassy hill late yesterday and perhaps the grass was sprayed with chemicals and he is having an allergic reaction to the chemicals or tot he grass itself. None of the other children seem to be affected though including his brother and the rash started on his back which is an area that was covered by his shirt. I am looking for any help with an explanation of a cause of the rash, and also an action plan. I stopped all supplements today except Houston enzymes, Vitamin C, and magnesium and lots of water to flush out his system. He has never been on Valtrex. Thank you for any help with this concerning situation. I am not sure whether to be worried or to rejoice. Beth
Guest guest
Beth - I would definately DROP the Olive Leaf, and never give it again! We had this exact reaction while doing Yasko's clostridia protocol with Bay Leaf and some herbs. Although it DID cure the severe clostridia and prevent us from having to resort to antibiotics, my 2yr dd was COVERED in raised, whelty hives. That is an allergic reaction that you are describing, also called hives, and I would discontinue it immediately. Herbs can REALLY cause some serious hives, and are quite powerful. I know about chemical exposure, and I think that would be more like the red face, hyper activity, etc instead. And viral detox, from what I know, does NOT look like raised hives. Delayed reaction from antibiotcs...doubtful. For THIS kind of reaction, you would have seen it I would think within the first few days. Swelling face and eyes are definately a sign of a severe allergic reaction. The rule with allergic reactions is that the next time it will be even more severe. We are also in Step 1 Yasko, so the supplements I know can be overwhelming. I would also recommend also easing SLOWLY into all new supplements, like 1/4cap the first two days, then 1/4cap at 2x/day for few days, then 1/2cap once day, etc. For the meantime, if the benedryl doesn't work overnight, get some Cortef and Zyrtec from your doctor to calm down the reaction. Hope this helps. :-) > > My son who is 8 years old, with regressive autism, a history of > colitis and LNH of the ileum, and on Step I of the Yasko protocol > developed a horrible full body rash last night and this morning. > This is a first ever rash he has ever had and he rarely gets sick. > The only other rash he had was when he had a tummy rash of a totally > different appearance when had at 3 yo when chelating with oral DMSA. > That rash was fine; this one is blotchy and welty. > > I am wondering if Olive Leaf extract could be responsible. > > I gave him 1 OLE (a capsule of the Life Flo brand) and 1 Caprylic on > Wednesday late afternoon.
