NT's on Doctor Who

I rarely watch Doctor Who on the Sci Fi Channel, but I watched tonight.

On this episode, the Doctor and some other passengers get stranded in a passenger vehicle on a world where nothing can. However, something was there and it possessed one of the passengers.

Now, the passenger couldn't move. However, she did begin echoing what the people were saying. This freaked them out and caused a panic. Eventually, she/it began talking on speed with them.

The Doctor points out that maybe whatever is possessing the woman is learning from them, by mimicking their speech, and also perhaps gaining in power. So, did the people shut up? Of course not. They argued. They argued and fought about what the thing was (and a professor was absolutely certain that nothing could possibly live on the planet and that the woman was just crazy), about who the Doctor was and why he was talking to the woman before her possession, and what to do, including throwing out she/it and even the Doctor too.

All this time, she/it was watching and repeating and learning. Her/it behavior even changed a couple of times, which they noticed. Did they shut up? No. They only got louder and more argumentative and hostile toward each other.

Before the spoiler: I thought it was very interesting. The thing to do was get away from the immobile she/it and shut up. I mean, they only had to be quiet for less than an hour. You would think they could be quiet for a mere hour or less if their lives were on the line. But no, they were NTs. They had to talk and argue, create factions and jockey for power.

Spoiler warning

The NTs managed to convince themselves that somehow the Doctor was in cahoots with the thing, and they were going to throw both of them out. By that time, they realized that it was only copying the Doctor and only looking at him. It ends up with him talking to her/it and she/it begins talking ahead of him. She/it says she is coming back to life, that it feels warm and that it could feel their warmth and blood.

Now, I'm AS but even I could see that her/it's body language was totally different, the way it stood, its expression, the way it talked, all of that. However, the people, all save one, were totally convinced that the thing was now in the Doctor. She/it was convincing them to throw the Doctor outside where he would die, and they started doing it.

Fortunately, it gets thrown out instead and the Doctor lives.

It is amusing after that that the arrogant professor is quiet, and one woman who was all for throwing the Doctor out and even hugged the possessed woman when she was moving again, said to the Doctor that she had said she knew it was still in that woman all the time.

It was a very interesting study in human nature.

Personally, I would have tried to knock them all unconscious, or kill them, if they wouldn't shut up. After all, if it was their talking that was aiding the creature, then stop the talking.

I saw that episode, with a friend of mine who knows I am into autistic advocacy,

and the general social implications that you point out jumped out at me, too.

**spoiler info**

I was disappointed that the creature ended up being " bad " , I would have

preferred that it was misunderstood. But there's differentphobia in producers

too, I guess..

**end spoiler**

That's cool that you saw it too and had the same thoughts. Just like the movie, The Mist, that was talked about not long ago, the people were the danger to themselves as much or more than the enemy itself. They did have a valid point that the creature might get loose on the outpost if they were rescued, but still, if they had remained quiet and calm, the thing would have been much less powerful by the time help arrived. For that matter, whispered communication with the rescue team might have allowed all but the possessed person to be taken off the vehicle, leaving that one behind. Scientists could then go to the vehicle with cameras to study it. Then, if what happens indeed happened to the scientists, there would be a record of it and the vehicle could be left abandoned or it could be destroyed.
