Guest guest
hi Raven: We have noticed that some Native Americans pick and chose what they use of the modern world, they are semingly not as locked into it as the predominant culture is. This seems to be a personal or family choice not always dependent on financial resources or lack of. We (my husband and I) think this is admirable. (We first started to observe this when we were in a coffee shop in a prairie town, 20 or 25 years ago. Some 'good old boys' were talking loudly and critically of 'the natives' and how they just used some benefits of modern society.) Since then we have observed the different customs and traditions, how people do things around us. This area we live in may seem predominately white middle class BUT there are many other cultures. Also many Native Americans on the Canadian Prairies seem to have close ties with large extended families. This would help in a time of economic or technological collapse. (My grandmother was of Native American ancestry, she chose to 'pass for white' to survive, she was divorced and owned a business in the 1940's and 1950's, both choices not common for women then. My dad was, at least in his middle age, proud to be of Native heritage. My parents taught me to be respectful of different cultures and to respect the natural world.) renaissanzelady > Considering that the white man's government has exiled most Aboriginals > to reservations where poverty is 'de rigeur' it's pretty easy to say > that, yes, we would survive better than those who rely so much on > technological civilization.
