Beats me, but if you get an answer offlist, I'd be interested in knowing

too.

Tonya

private schools for children with

autism.

Does anybody know if there is a publication or a compiled list

somewhere on the various private schools around the state for

children or accept children with autism?

Thanks.

Try this website from Texas Education Agency. It lists both day and

residential and includes autism.

Thanks. I am also looking at tuition rates. Unfortunately it is so

hard to compare these school. Some have 1:1 ration and some 1:5 and

obviously that drives tuition, as well as other factors... But I

will start calling the TEA list.

Thanks

I don't recall where or when I got this list but I saved it in my resources

folder. It's not autism-specific but I do know several of these educate kids

with autism. This is just for the DFW area.

That looks like the list of private schools that was compiled in D

Magazine not too long ago - just for children with special

needs/learning differences, etc.

There's also

DFW Center for Autism - ABA preschool - I think it's $42,000/year.

's Discovery - private school - Wylie - I think ages 4 & up?

I believe their tuition is $30,000/year. I think they have an

eclectic approach.

Chase's Place - - ??????

Horizon Program at Capitol School - Austin - ABA school for ages 3-

8 - I think they're close to $30,000/year.

Treehouse School in San - ABA school for ages 3-8 (I think) -

not sure about tuition - think like $20,000/year?

Monarch School in Houston? (High-functioning)

Westview in Houston?

Of the list below, I know Child Study Center takes children with

autism - it may only be preschool. Not sure about $$$? I'm pretty

sure OakHill and Vanguard and Newfound and St. take high

functioning children with autism? I'm pretty sure Oak Hill is 1:8

ratio and Vanguard I think is 1:5 ratio, and Newfound 1:5. I think

Oak Hill is like $10,000/year and Vanguard $12,000, and Newfound

$13,000. Those may be old numbers. I think St. is right in

there somewhere.

Autism Treatment Center obviously takes children with autism. I

know last I heard 97% of their students (I think they have 20) are

wards of the state.

Callier has the 1/2 day preschool I think.

Are you looking for a school that is autism-specific, or any private school

that will take a child on the spectrum? There are some schools that can

accommodate these kids depending upon their needs. What level of services

are you looking for? If it's a day school, which part of Texas?

I was just about to ask that same question, could someone forward me

that same list for the Dallas/Ft Worth area?

Wayman Learning Center in Plano, TX, which opened August 2004

Wayman Learning Center, part of Wayman Professional Services, LLC, is

owned and directed by Gail Wayman, MEd, BCABA. Provides the following

educational/behavioral services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

(ASD),

other developmental disabilities and developmental delays.

Above taken from a post that came out last year.

The Westview School in West Houston off of Hammerly & Beltway 8, enrolls

children with Autism, Asperger's PDD, ADHD, LD etc. Currently, there are 128

students. Pre-school average class size is 4 students with 1 teacher and 1

aide.

Lower/upper elementary class size is 6 to 8 with 1 teacher and 1 aide. I'm

not sure what the class size is for middle school. Westview is a private

non-profit school and is tuition based with the annual cost spread out over 10

months. At the pre-school and pre-K level tuition is $700 per month,

Kindergarten is $800 per month, lower and upper elementary is $950 and middle

school is

$1050. There are no high school classes yet, however, that may change in the

future. The school enrolls children starting at 2 years old. At the

pre-school level there are new classes this year using an ABA approach. Once

the

children progress into the upper levels the ABA approach isn't used per se but

the staff does receive on-going training in autism spectrum and related

disorders as a requirement to obtain CE credit.

At the pre-K level and above, the school seems to only want to continue

educating students with high functioning autism, Asperger's. I don't know

why--perhaps it's because they don't want to deal with severe behavior issues

(but

they do deal with them because I see it all the time, just not bad ones) and

non-verbal children--just my opinion. However, they will recommend placement

elsewhere if a child isn't progressing at the school.

There is also the Aim High Academy in Bellaire (community within Houston),

which cost $5,000 per month and Briarwood School in West Houston, last time I

checked I think the tuition was around 12K to 16K per year.

I dunno. Maybe they do charge differently for different

levels. But then again private high schools tend to be

more expensive than private elementaries.

The Arbor School does not specialize in autism, per se, but it does have a

BCBA on staff and a 2:1 student teacher ratio.

Liz, are you interested just in schools, or did you also mean day programs?

My son attends BTTC in Rosenberg (we drive 30 miles from our home in Houston

to go there, because I think it's the best choice for my son at this time).

BTTC is a day program, and they staff 1:1. The monthly tuition is $3500.

There are a couple of classrooms where the kids get discrete trials for a

pretty substantial portion of the day, but in my son's classroom, the day is

structured much like it would be in a regular kindergarten or first grade

classroom: morning circle time, gross motor/PE, centers, teacher time

(which is 1:1 DT), group lunch, recess outside, afternoon circle, small

group activity, and more teacher time. My neurotypical son has

occassionally gone to BTTC to be a peer model. There's a lot of oversight

and active involvement by two BCBAs in the day treatment program at BTTC,

and I think a couple of therapists are BCABAs.

I don't know for sure, but I think BTTC might be the only one that offers a

program that is stuctured like a regular school. My son previously attended

The Shape of Behavior. I forget the exact amount of tuition we paid, but it

was approximately $3700 per month. There are some other clinics around

town, which I have not seen mentioned in this thread, like Including Kids,

The Learning Repertoire, TYAP, and Spectrum of Hope. Spectrum of Hope

offers after school care, which can either be therapy or recreational time.

I've visited all but two of these clinics, and I think each one has

something different to offer. I've heard good and bad about most of the

clinics, and I think it's fair to say that the happiest parents seem to be

the ones who feel there's a great deal of involvement by the BCBA... as in,

the BCBA is familiar with each child's program, knows each child's problem

behaviors, will offer suggestions to the therapists on the fly, and

recognizes and intervenes when the therapists are in over their heads.

Thanks! all of this is great information. I am trying to pull

together information on what it costs to send a child with autism to

a private school. I guess we know the answer and it does vary

greatly just like the needs of our children. The bottom line is,

if some one asks me, 'on an average what does it cost to send a child

with autism to a private school?' I would like to give them an answer

and back it up with some figures. I will try and pull all of this

information together and share with everyone. Thanks Geraldine, et.al.

Please Liz --- when you pull it all together -- I'll put it on the website so we

can direct folks

there for the listing...

I will. However, it may not be a complete listing it will probably

be a snap shot of what private schools look like in TX. This is my

job for the day...
