Guest guest
Has anyone ever had the schools either hire your own aid/attendant for your child in the schools or had them volunteer and be your childs aid?
Guest guest
One child in our son's elementary had an aide supplied by her parents with funding from MHMR a few years ago. Guest guest
Yes, I have, TWICE. I know this is like " Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause. " We have had two schools/principals who allowed us to send our own therapist as a 'shadow' for my son. A traditional FWISD for K and to repeat K and a charter school for 3,4, and 5th grades. When the principal at the FWISD resigned after her 30+ years of service she indicated that we would no longer be allowed to do that. She had made an exceptional exception for us. And at the charter school the therapists were viewed as a welcomed professional to assist with my child and when not serving him they helped willingly with other kids and teachers tasks. We pulled my son out of that school in February because the administrator could not really support the teachers well and the other kids were getting too rowdy though. He is now back in FWISD and loving it and without a therapist shadowing him. We hope this lasts for a few good years. You just have to stay on top of your childs needs. I can tell you that I believe both of those principals were willing to accept my therapist because we had a good open relationship and approached it from the get go as a way to meet his needs best. It really does seem to be at the principal's discretion in a large part! I understand from friends that it is not uncommon in some private/church school programs to allow your own aide; if that helps! > Has anyone ever had the schools either hire your own aid/attendant for your > child in the schools or had them volunteer and be your childs aid? > >
Guest guest
Wow, that's pretty amazing. I know of school districts in the Region 4 area who have HIRED the trained shadow/therapists who had been working with the child. I was under the impression that there's a liability issue for non-district employees to be in the classroom. I may be completely off on this. S Re: your own aid in schools Yes, I have, TWICE. Guest guest
What I have experienced is that it is usually the principal in the schools I have dealt with in getting the aide, are what I say more child centered instead of making the school run like a business. I have had a child I work with have a volunteer aide in the classroom and then we she left to get another job. We asked the school to provide and aide and they did. The special ed. director was in the meeting and we really went into the detail of how it would help the teacher and the other students in the classroom. We also mentioned that we would like to see the aide faded out through the school year. As for the non school employees being in the classroom as a liability - I always bring up parent volunteers to the school and I see how they respond to it. Guest guest
All I know is when I asked to be the shadow for my son since I've been his teacher, therapist, ..etc all his life, they would not entertain the idea citing confidentiality issues. However, it was ok for me to volunteer to help out in another class. Go figure. Re: your own aid in schools > > > Yes, I have, TWICE. I know this is like " Yes, Virginia, there > is a Santa Clause. If they would have hired her and made her a district employee, then there would not have been a liability issue anymore-- but they just didn't want to hire another person for that class at that time. Guest guest
Tonya Is there anyway I can contact the parents of the child that had the aid that the parents hired through MHMR funds? It would really help if I could find out how the school responded to this. What district is that in? You can have them email me if that works best stlevine@... Thanks so much RE: your own aid in schools One child in our son's elementary had an aide supplied by her parents with funding from MHMR a few years ago. Guest guest
, I'm sorry I don't know their names. All I know is the child's name was and when I asked how they got the aide, another aide told me it was with MHMR funding. I think they got concerned about the confidentiality issues, because no on would tell me anything else. School district is Idalou, right outside Lubbock.
