I hope you'll feel so much healthier after you get those tonsils out and suffer with less infections. I am extremely allergic to many things, and none of that developed until I was in my mid thirties or so. Tonsils Hi I just wanted to say thanks to those of you who responded. I agree that it would be great to do the surgery after I'd been on synthroid longer, but I keep getting more infections, which means more anibiotics and for somreaseon that throws me into tyroiditis. He didn't want to swallow anything since it hurt, so, my recommendation is regarding IVs -- he had an IV for fluids already, so I asked them to order the pain medicine and the antibiotics in a form that can be given through the IV instead of by mouth. That helped a lot but you need to tell them as soon as you can because it takes time for them to get it ready in the IV form depending on how busy the hospital is. There are also vitamin drinks like Ensure that you can get to make sure that she's getting enough vitamins since she probably won't want to eat for a few days. Make sure that you really watch how much she's drinking to avoid dehydration. Plus, at a certain number of days after the surgery (I think it's 7?), the scabs come off. That's a risky time because more bleeding can occur. My friend's daughter was eating but not drinking so she took her to the doctor to check on bleeding. That morning, the pediatrician didn't find anything. By the night time, since her daughter still didn't drink anything, she took her to the ER. Another doctor checked and didn't find anything but then an ENT looked at her daughter and found that she was indeed bleeding. They immediately gave her surgery to stop the bleeding and she was fine. If my friend didn't watch her that closely, she might have missed it. Plus, the key here was to have an ENT take a look. The ENT said that if she had waited one more night, she may have lost her daughter. This isn't to scare you, it's just to let you know that there are risks and you need to be vigilant. On a good note, my son had a quick recovery and was back to himself within about 3 days. He was drinking the first night after the surgery and was eating the next day -- albeit less than usual. Pop cycles were what he wanted for a couple of days and some soft foods like apple sauce. I think maybe get a couple of jars of baby food fruits may help. Don't they have Pedialite (not sure of spelling) pop cycles? I caught him riding his bike on day 2 so I only gave pain meds at night. If I wasn't worried about bleeding I wouldn't have done it but I knew I needed to keep him calm. He still drank plenty and ate some, mostly Popsicles and yogurt. I was really scared of bleeding but we never saw any evidence of any. They were fine with french fries, potato chips - in fact, the salt helps with the healing. The pain is one issue and it wasn't bad, but refused anything but jello when the taste in his mouth was bad during the sloughing off process. Popsicles didn't even work for a few days. Guest guest Posted October 20, 2009 Report Share Posted October 20, 2009 Hi Oh my goodness---our just had his tonsils and adnoids removed on October 7th and we were in the hospital until October 18th......I too got advice on what to do but it is hard to know how each child recovers. My son did not want to drink at all so that is why we needed IV fluids to get him through. He also got a soar on his tongue where they clamp their tongue donw during surgery which was very big and painful and then he got thrush because of all the antibiotics he was on so that was very painful. His first 3 days or so were not too bad but then he hit a wall and it was horrible....I am not trying to scare you but the most important thing is tylenol with codein from day one every 4 hours for at least the first week or so and then also because that can cause constipation a stool softener from day one is a must.
