Guest guest
a, I just asked S. the same thing earlier this week because she told me a month ago her son Karl has had and still receives this therapy and is doing very well with it and this is what she sent me: There are people ALL over the city. Go to _www.upledger.com_ (http://www.upledger.com/) and look in the consumer/looking for a practioner section. There is a place where you type in your zip code and can locate all the practioners who are close to you. She told me a lot of other positive stuff too but I'll let her respond directly to you so the information is coming to you first hand. Guest guest
Hi a-- A friend got me a couple of books on cranio sacral therapy when Karl was about 3 1/2, shortly after he was diagnosed. I was intrigued, but put it aside because we were doing so much else, and Karl was making progress. Then out of the blue when he was about 4 yr and 8 months, we had this horrible aggression come out of nowhere. He started head butting again, hitting, throwing his head into the sofa, a lot of tantrums, . . . .and nothing had changed except for he was eating triple his normal amounts. So, I was musing, .. . hmmm, growth spurt, . . .and was musing about the study that said the brains tend to be larger, and I just had an inspriration that his growth spurt might be causing a lot of internal pressure. Then I remembered about the cranio sacral, and thought, well, it can't hurt, I'll try it. We went for one session. The aggression almost completely gone, his movements became more coordinated. But most impressively he spontaneously answered a question from another child for the first time in his life. At that time, it was very difficult to get him to answer questions, and he NEVER responded spontaneouly to other children other than to avoid them. I was hooked. We began seeing the therapist 2 X a week over the next 8 months. During that time we saw lots of improvements across the board. Improvements in physical coordination, speech, social connectedness, increase in self-control, broadening of interests, interest in other children, wanting to have friends. . . it was difficult to have him lie on the table. The progress was up and down, like anything. . . After about 8 months, we began less frequent sessions spacing more like 1X every other week or every 3 weeks. Now we see two therapists who do " multiple hands " cranio sessions 1X a month with occaisional in between sessions if something seems to need extra adjusting. It's been very interesting to me that the cranio seems to have direct effect on Karl's bowel control. Sometimes after a session, he will lose it, and have accidents all over the place even as he makes a leap in his language (like now asking appropriate why questions frequently throughout the day). If I knew then what I know now, I would have spent more money on cranio at the beginning. Oh well. Of other people I've spoken with, it seems that the kids who are hyper, have some aggression, some SIBs, are the ones who benefit the most. I've been so impressed with what I've seen with Karl, that I began using cranio to address some of my own health problems. I've been very pleased. I use a different therapist though. Each one has a slightly different take on how they approach it, so you have to find one with whom you can communicate well and who specializes in children. Also, as Karl became more able to express internal states over time, he would comment how the therapist always made his head feel better. I also began giving him choices on which therapist he wanted to see. Different times, it was different therapists. Also, he hasn't head butted anything for almost 2 years. Hope this helps. I had mentioned the cranio to Jeff a few years ago at the Open Windows conference when he told me about Ben's headbanging. I found one of the therapists that I'm currently using just by calling people who showed up near my zip code. I asked specifically how much experience they have treating children, and some general questions about how they got into cranio, and just used my instinct on who I thought would be best. If you have any other quetions, let me know. Re: cranial sacral therapy Thanks ! Sorry I missed this thread earlier this week--I will check out the website. Guest guest
, Thanks for the great information. I did check out a chiropractor a couple of years ago--into holistic type treatments--seemed very interested and knowledgeable about autism issues too. He said he did do cranio sacral therapy but didn't want to do it with Ben since he wasn't sitting still. At that time we started chelating so I just shrugged off the cranial sacral therapy. Someone recently told me that that chiropractor must not have been very good at it to have made a comment like that about Ben not sitting still enough to cooperate. That should not have been an issue. After looking up therapists online, I've found most are alternative/holistic therapists. Does you insurance cover your therapy? Also, do you mind telling me generally how much a session costs? Thanks a bunch, a Re: cranial sacral therapy a, I just asked S. the same thing earlier this week because she told me a month ago her son Karl has had and still receives this therapy and is doing very well with it and this is what she sent me: There are people ALL over the city. Guest guest
Cranio sacral is VERY different from chiropractic adjustments. You can barely feel what's being adjusted. Only someone trained in adult cranio would insist that the child lay on the table. Someone who specializes in pediatric cranio is accustomed to following kids around the room, or treating them in their mother's laps or on the floor or where-ever they end up at first until they get used to it. If you can find an OT who is also a therapist, then insurance will cover it. Otherwise, you'll just have to take it off your taxes. The range for Houston is $80 - $130, with the majority charging $90/hour. S Re: cranial sacral therapy , Thanks for the great information. Guest guest
a, Chiropractors, OTs, and PTs can all do cranial sacral therapy if they are certified. Check with area pediatric OTs and PTs. Martha Ulcak
