Guest guest
, Thanks for publishing that list regarding the different types of fiber, and the benefits. I jsut had my 2nd bout with diverticulitis, and my Enterologist has warned (threatened?) me that if I'm not consistent with my daily Metamucil for fiber supplement, next time I could get a serious flare-up with an emergency re-sectioning and the " bonus bag " . (let's just not go there....). I'm curious-- have any other readers of this list had diverticulitis? Is it my imagination, or does it seem more common in people on HAART? I have just run into the 3rd friend in 2 weeks who's gotten it. I wonder if the caustic HIV meds we all take so regularly are contributing to it?? > Insoluble Fiber > Functions of Insoluble Fibermove bulk through the intestines > control and balance the pH (acidity) in the intestines > > Benefits of Insoluble Fiberpromote regular bowel movement and prevent > constipation > remove toxic waste through colon in less time > keep an optimal pH in intestines to prevent microbes from producing cancer > substances; therefore preventing colon cancer > > Food Sources of Insoluble FiberWhole-wheat products > Wheat oat > Corn bran > Flax seeds > Vegetables such as green beans, cauliflowers and potato skins > Fruit skins and root vegetable skins > > Soluble Fiber > Functions of Soluble Fiberbind with fatty acids > prolong stomach emptying time so that sugar is released and absorbed more > slowly > > Benefits of Soluble Fiberlower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the Bad > cholesterol) therefore reducing the risk of heart disease > regulate blood sugar for people with diabetes > > Food Sources of Soluble FiberOat/Oat bran > Dried beans and peas > Barley > Flax seeds > Fruits such as oranges and apples > Vegetables such as carrots > Psyllium husks > > > > > > Vergel > Director, Program for Wellness Restoration (PoWeR) > An non profit organization > www.powerusa.org > > AIDS is not over. Guest guest
I had one case of diverticulitis back in 1998, but I've never had a problem since. I had been on ARV continually since 1988, and HAART since 1996-1997. None of my physicians mentioned any reason to think that HIV meds might have played a part in this, but then this did happen quite a few years ago in my case. Dan Dunable ddunable@... Guest guest
Diverticulitis is very common in the general population. I'm not aware of any studies saying it is more common in people with HIV. As we age, it happens. It certainly seems plausible that an individual with a weakened immune system could have more flare ups.
