Guest guest
You are not hopeless you are just NEW. We've all been new. Buy some organic sprouting seeds from Sproutpeople.com or handypantry.com. Start small. Take a mason jar, some cheesecloth and two tablespoons of seeds. Soak overnight. Next day, rinse and drain thoroughly. Do this again 12 hours later. In a few days you'll see them sprouting. When you are done by the 4th or 5th day, rinse and drain thoroughly again and put the mason jar in some light in your kitchen and by the end of the day, you'll see them nice and green. Get cracking!! lol Melody > > Hello everyone! > I'm so glad to have found this group. I have just begun experimenting with sprouting because I am switching to a mostly raw food diet and I am not having much luck with anything I try to sprout. > I don't know what I am doing wrong. I have read some sprouting websites and watched several videos and am following the instructions but nothing I have tried has sprouted so far. > I tried lentils first. The 1st two attempts, they got black dots (mold I assume) on them and I tossed them out. The third attempt, they actually started to sprout, although took way longer than they should have from what I have read. They died out before they even got 1/4 of an inch. I also tried natural sesame seeds, brown rice, wild rice, mung beans with no luck.....nothing. The mung beans were sold as dried sprouted mung beans so that might be why. I tried pumpkin seeds but could not tell if they sprouted or not, as I had read that the sprout on seeds can remain tiny. > I have been using open glass bowls and water from my kentwood water cooler to soak overnight, rinsing in morning and before bed, sometimes in afternoon too. Then the next day I drain the water and have tried various things...a mesh screen, cheesecloth, a damp paper towel. Nothing seems to work. Oh I also tried cannelini beans with no luck, (nothing happened)as well. Am I hopeless as a sprouter? lol >
Guest guest
Thanks everyone, Yeah, I had been wondering if it was the quality of my seeds, some of the beans were just plain old cheap-o walmart brand. And I did see a video that mentions irradiation but I was eager to experiment with what I had on hand. I went to wholefoods and I did get some raw organic flax seeds which I have not tried yet but I learned that they get sort of gelatinous when they sprout? And so I assume they might be better for smoothies and juicing then salads? Eh, either way I think I will give them a try next. I love the sprout people website and I am planning to order some seeds. I am very interested in the micro greens and will try that too now that I know that they are easy. Thank you for your help! > > > > > > Hello everyone! > > > I'm so glad to have found this group. Guest guest
Do keep in mind that not all seeds " sprout " -flax does not sprout in the sense that beans do-in other words, it won't get a pretty green growth on it. Flax, chia, pumpkin, sunflower, and other seeds are " soakers " in which you " sprout " them by soaking, but they don't grow...unless you grow them in soil as a microgreen. I suggest starting with something like alfalfa, mung bean, radish, or something that will give you the actual " green sprout " it sounds like you are expecting. Flax and chia form a " gel " when they sprout, not an actual sprout. Guest guest
I agree, and though I have not grown flax as a microgreen yet I have grown chia (hydroponically) and it makes fabulous greens... > Do keep in mind that not all seeds " sprout " -flax does not sprout in the sense that beans do-in other words, it won't get a pretty green growth on it.
