Nina,

The purpose of the AFOs is to assist in picking your foot up. You shouldn't be

focusing on picking your foot up when you walk, if you are. Let the AFOs do the

job for your legs. It may just take a day or two to get used to. I don't

remember that specific problem when I got mine, but I know that they felt funny

and took a while to get used to.

Hi Nina,

I remember when I first started wearing AFOs I walked like I was walking in the

snow! But it didn't take long to just start walking and not thinking about it.

Hope they work out good for you. Without mine I would have trouble holding down

a full time job.

Nina:

If over time your muscles atrophied/contracted, you may feel sore as

the muscles stretch. I would ask whomever prescribed/fitted the AFO if

what you are feeling is normal for your leg/legs.

Remember you are walking differently with the braces than without them.

Nina,

I used to use braces. Now I use ankle supports that are much softer and connect

differently to your shoe. You don't have anything under the foot only on the

ankle and you can feel the ground again. If you want more information on them,

let me know.
