Nike unveils athletic shoe for Native Americans

Nike introduced in late September an athletic shoe designed for

Native Americans. The Air Native N7, whose development involved

podiatrists and individuals from more than 70 tribes, is wider than

other Nike shoes, has fewer seams, and has additional cushioning.

Constructed from the inside out and incorporating a unique last, the

shoe is intended to provide a better fit for its target market. It

is also designed to reduce foot irritation caused by badly fitting

footwear.

The product name, Air Native N7, refers to the Native American

philosophy that today's decisions affect seven generations. Profits

from the sale of the shoe will fund programs on Native American land

that use sports to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

" Nike is aware of the growing health issues facing Native

Americans, " said Sam McCracken, manager of the company's Native

American Business Program. " We believe physical activity can and

should be a fundamental part of the health and wellness of all

Native Americans. "

Air Native N7 shoes are being offered only through Nike's Native

American Business Program, which makes the company's products

available at discounted prices at Native American health and

wellness centers.
