A Series of Workshops for Parents and Professionals

Presented by Dr. Nikki Keefer and Spectrum of Hope

Workshop #1 – Identifying Function and Changing Behavior

July 16, 2005 at Spectrum of Hope in Cypress, Texas

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Registration at 8:30 a.m.)

This series is devoted to embracing the unique challenges individuals with

Autism face and teaching them to express themselves by expanding their

communication skills. The workshops will focus on teaching parents,

educators, and other caregivers the necessary tools to reduce problem

behaviors exhibited by individuals with Autism. Other treatment approaches

such as training functionally equivalent replacement behaviors, redirection,

and differential reinforcement are among the many topics to be discussed

over the various presentations. Attendees will be provided with the unique

opportunity to conduct actual Functional Assessments and develop treatment

protocols based on the results.

This series is based upon the teachings of B.F. Skinner and will be

conducted by Nikki Keefer, Ph.D., BCBA. Dr. Keefer has been a Behavior

Analyst for over 13 years. She received her Doctorate from the University of

Florida under Dr. H.S. Pennypacker. She is currently serving as the Acting

Clinical Director for four different providers in the States of Florida and

Texas serving individuals with Autism and other disabilities. Additionally,

Dr. Keefer is providing clinical oversight and consulting for three other

agencies across the state of Florida. Furthermore, Dr. Keefer serves on the

board of the Autism Society of Greater Orlando. She has extensive

experience working with individuals diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury,

Schizophrenia, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Autism, Developmental Disabilities, as

well as other various clinical diagnoses.

Dr. Keefer will describe and provide examples of identifying the functions

of behavior problems and introduce ways to reduce them while increasing the

opportunities for appropriate behaviors to occur. The ultimate goal of this

series is to provide parents, educators and caregivers with the experience

and skills necessary to create long lasting and meaningful behavior change.
