This morning around 4:45, I was awakened by a very annoying noise. At first I thought it was the alarm clock, so, still mostly asleep, I fumbled around and finally get it turned off. Problem was, the noise kept going. So then I thought it was the TV which was still on but the volume well down, left that way in case any alerts came up. The screen was clear meaning no alerts on it, so I tried the mute button.

Now, for some really odd reason the remote that works the cable TV box won't work on the TV, meaning that I have to use 2 remotes: one to chance channels and one to work the volume. All I could find was the cable remote. Bear in mind, I'm still mostly asleep, but I know how to work the remote. I realize the TV isn't muting, but it takes a bit for me to realize that I have the wrong remote. Finally I find the other one, which was tangled up in the blankets, and I try that. It doesn't work. I push the selection buttons on the remote to make sure it is set for TV and try again, but still the noise is going on.

This is when I disentangled myself from the blanket, and with a few choice expletives walk over to the TV to figure out what is wrong with it. When I reach it, I realize the noise isn't coming from the TV. Still not quite awake, I think maybe it is the alarm after all. I pick it up but no, it isn't that either. Then I realize the noise is coming from another room.

That wakes me right up with the thought that maybe its the smoke alarm. Now I run out in the hall and hear the noise is coming from the kitchen. I go in there and I find the source of the noise.

Sitting on the kitchen counter was the new storm alert radio I had bought that afternoon. It has a setting where it sits there nice a quietly but gives off a loud warning tone if any weather alerts are issued for your area. I'd never heard it before. I pick it up and turn off the alarm and see on the display "Tornado Watch." I hit another button and pick up the weather alert broadcast and it is listing counties all around here. I turn it off, leaving the alert mode on since I know that since it went off, this area was included and this was expected anyway because of Hannah.

Then I went back to bed for a while. Just woke up to check the weather and thought I'd post that. I'm going to do a few things around the house then try to get a little more rest before Hannah gets here. I think the main part is going to be well east of here, but the 5 day track is now so large scale I can't really tell how far over it is going to be.

Strange how that works isn't it? I could program the cable remote to do both, but I'd have to look up the code, and still use more buttons to switch between TV and Cable functions. This new remote I got because the old one wore out, isn't as well designed as the other in the first place. With the old one all the commonly used buttons were right together, but with the new one they are spread out either taking two hands to operate it or some juggling with one hand.

Right now there isn't much wind and just a bit of rain. However, the center seems to be coming right up I-95 which will mean a more or less direct hit. That's a few hours out yet, and I'm watching it closely. Here is a link to the local radar as of 9:00 AM. Center of circulation looks like it is just south of the North Carolina- Virginia border moving roughly north along I-95. It should be here in a few hours.

Interesting story . I have always wondered how those storm alert

radios work for people. Seems like most would croak before they ever

figured out there was an alert.

Thanks.

There are several kinds of weather radio. An old one I have in my kit is a dedicated weather radio that only gets the weather service broadcasts. It doesn't have an alarm feature on it so you have to listen to the local broadcast all the time. That's not a bad thing since the droning voice and slight static often helped me get to sleep, and the alarm sounded with new alerts would wake me up.

Some of the new radios have a setting for the weather stations but also regular stations. I have one of those in the household kit since it is bigger than my mobile kit. My mother got one that was designed by the Weather Channel, but I don't really like it since it is only AC/Solar/handcrank powered with no battery backup. I have one that is those plus a battery backup.

This new radio is one that sits there quietly monitoring the weather service stations listening for the alert signals. When it detects one, it sounds an alarm. You then go look at it to see what kind of alarm and you can press a button that turns off the alarm and allows you to hear the announcement. I rather like that one since I can leave it on most of the time and still get the warnings. Those usually come up on the TV as well, though more than a few times the alerts have come up with only a few minutes left, meaning an hour or more had passed since the alert was first issued, and a couple of times after the alert had expired.
