Guest guest
one of THE greatest public health dangers after the disruption of the infrastructure is WATER and LATRINES not burring the dead -- after the Hutu-Tusi Genocide the UN went in and REALLY looked at that the public health problems were -- everyone had thought that it was the corpses. So the FIRST priority should be to burry/burn the dead. NOT SO! Seems they are WAY down the list -- set up a collection area, yes. But FIRST preserve drinking water then potable water - then make a safe latrine-- then, safeguard your existing food -- so far down the list because most food takes water to prepare so safe food with dirty water = no food. (which people will eat any way and water which they will drink anyway,  Then things like a safe place for infants to sleep, and safe waste disposal, and under that category come getting rid of the dead in such a fashion that 1) they can be retrieved and 2) they can be identified -- and the hard part 3) in such a way that it is in keeping with tribal custom -- which brings you back to 2 - so you can disintered them and then re-intered them according the the cultural requirements of the people involved. Part of 1, the easy retrieval goes record keeping - so you have photographic evidence both with the body and seperate, where found, how died, how old, male-female, what they were wearing, and if they have ID papers a copy of the ID and its numbers, and the data it contains PLUS any eye-witness's who say that's paul and he lives on the old Ranch, the Star Circle Star -- all of that goes into plastic screw cap water-tight containers which are buried with the person, and the name and LOGO of the organization taking the data -- so if you dug them up - you will have a good idea from what's there and if it matches the master record. For so long we have looked at the human body as 'dirty' and it's hung around for so long we no longer quetion it. After the Genocides in Africa, it was found that the ground water and drinking water was either poisoned/contaminated deliberately, or by runoff from garbage dumps and latrine areas that now the FIRST thing you do is SECURE the safe water -- make sure that nothing more gets into the water -- and that generally means moving stuff around, and 'cleaning' the well-head if that's what it is - THEN you localize infection - feces being the number one contaminant. Urine is he ONLY sterile substance that comes out of your body, so you don't worry about urine, but you do worry about what grows in a nutrient rich environment- right there you STOP the two main causes of future disease right in it's tracks, then you start on sepeate housing, (depending on where you are) Vacinations, preventitie innoculations -- and at the same time you systimatically burry the bodies, if a mass grave, lay them out in obvious rows and obvious layers, not tossed in like you often picture -- think of it as a compressed grave yard with rows and columns that intersect - row C column 12 -- third person down, 12th person over in layer 1 (or or 3 -- ) and so when you go looking you can find it -- use 'mud tracks' or 'sand-tracks' or corrigated roofs - try not to use what can be used to build a house) - something metal that will be picked up by a hand held 'gold finder' -- so you have both a GPS location and a general location where you can find the grave by just sweeping the ground with common instruments. So right up near the top is PRESERVATION OF WATER -- (which gives you water to drink, water to cook with, water to keep your body clean, etc -- and of course - a communal latrine so you localize waste and keep it from flowing into drinkable water. Also with your own house-- fill the tubs etc then TURN YOUR WATER OFF - while we put in a 'drain' just up from the flow of water to the house so we can turn off the water to the house, and then turn on the drian and drain water from the meter to our house line, so we can flush out 'dirty' water that may be in the mains -- most people don't - so remember INSIDE your toilet tank is safe clean water, ditto your tub if you kept it clean, if not, clorox will clean most of it -- then turn off the water to your house -- and when it's 'safe' to turn wter back on, use both the highest and lowest point of water in your house -- usally a shower and your hot water heater drain and after turning off your hot water heater - run them both for a good half hour to hour to be sure -- then start low and SLOWLY turn he water off starting low with your hot water tank drain - and turn the faucets s-l-o-w-l-y - this prevents what firefighters call 'water hammer' -- turning off flowing water really fast is like having a metal plate drop PLOP right in front of the flow water, and it hits it like a hammer -- and it can break a pipe, or cause old metal pipes to start leaking -- the LAST think you want to happen after a 'disaster'. And words to remember VERY WELL AND NEVER FORGET - when Amundsen and were racing to the South Pole, a reporter wished him " Good luck on your adventure! " - at which he stopped dead in his tracks and said: I hope not! an 'Adventure is when an expedition goes wrong! " - , as we all know had an adventure, Amundsen had an expedition! So you are hopeing for a very good expedition but NEVER an 'adventure' - I think my only point was that the bottle of Clorox you use for cleaning water for sprouts in a foreign nation can also be used in a FAR more practical way -- to keep you and your family from becoming ill in a bacterial, fungal, viral, moldy jungle that erupts when our infrastructure goes even a little bit haywire (caused by a piece of bailing wire getting suck in the gears of the first balers - causing them to come to a grinding halt - thus when things don't work they are 'haywire' . A lot of people don't make the connection until it's pointed out to them in one non-standard situation, and suddenly they see a multitude of situations where it might work. but Clorox is NOT a personal disinfectant - it's caustic (as anyone who's had it eat a hole through their Jeans knows) so PLEASE keep it SAFE AND OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN OF ALL AGES (YES even the 45 year old 'children')  and use it ONLY in diluted form---!!!!!!! --- Dream Well. Travel Well. May you Walk Your Path in Beauty. " Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known. " Carl Sagan. Subject: Re: a tiny bottle and a small pack of non-iodized salt. . . . I'll never look at Clorox the same way again. lol
