Low thyroid can have very serious and permanent consequences, esp to brain function, so it's not really something you want to mess around  with. Thyroid meds are simply replacing and supplementing what he is not producing himself.

I WANTED on the thyroid meds when hers was low. It was pretty funny cause when we went to the endo, she was worried I wouldn't want it, and I was worried she wouldn't give it yet. ;-) 's dose was halved after about a year on the SCD, and we do use coconut oil too. So the body levels out it seems. Even though she has grown a ton, and gained a lot of weight, her dose has not increased. So something is working for her.

Hypothroidism is VERY common in DS. Oddly enough, many of the symptoms for it are the same as common issues in DS.Here is a great site with lots of info :  http://thyroid.about.com/  Shomon wrote a great book which I would highly recommend !

I used to give 30 mg. of zinc daily, but in the last month or so, I got lax with that. I gave it to him last night, though, and you can bet I will give it faithfully! I'm thinking it would be difficult to persuade the ped to get 's zinc level tested. He is the type who is always right and doesn't yield.

How much coconut oil should I give him? And how do I give it to him?

I mix a tsp. in with cooked rice or put some on a baked potato from time to time, but it is probably not enough or often enough to make a difference.

Now, we have an appointment with the ped on the 13th to " discuss " 's " hypothryoidism. " According to the nurse, the doctor said that untreated hypothyroidism can have serious consequences. Yet, has NONE of the symptoms of hypothyroidism! And when you give the body synthetic thyroid hormone, doesn't it cause the thyroid to become dependent on the synthetic hormone and produce even less on its own?

How am I going to discuss this with a doctor who has already made up his mind and isn't going to budge from his opinion which was formed back in med school?! And I am just a mom!

I don't bother to measure it at all. I use it like butter and put it on her food. tastes great on squash, with honey,  and pumpkin pie spices, same with warmed up applesauce. :-) She also likes it on peas.

She really doesn't eat much cooked, but i would use it for that with her if she did. Don't use any that doesn't taste GOOD. It should taste like yummy coconut. I really hated Spectrum's brand! Tasted horrible.

I totally agree!!! I thought it tasted like it was very, very old. I use Tropical Traditon and it's just down right yummy. Tastes great on warm  veggies or fruit. Some people like it in smoothies as it gets the same texture as a chocolate chip when it's cold!

Yes,

you also want his FreeT3, FreeT4 and thyroid antibodies tested.

He

is not truly hypothyroid unless his T4 levels are off. An elevated TSH is just

that, it is not true hypothyroidism.

You

want to be careful treating just the TSH, when the child is truly not

hypothyroid. This is why we have worked hard to get Osiyyah’s TSH to a

good number, because he has never truly been hypothyroid. His doctor didn’t

want to put him on thyroid meds anyways, so we had nothing to lose to try to get

his TSH down. And it has worked.

By

just treating the TSH, you could throw the child into hyperthyroidism which is much

harder to deal with than hypothyroidism.

I

would INSIST that you get ’s zinc levels tested. If my brother had

a doctor that was very set in his ways and wasn’t willing to work with us,

well he’d get quite an earful from us! And then we’d find another

doctor. But, I can understand if that is not easy to do. So, I would just be

very nice but insistent and pointed on what you want and don’t want.

I did cook w/ it. I did french fries, and fried squash. It was really light It's just so expensive for something like that. Never thought of using it as butter.. I'll have to try that.
