It is a streroid that reduces inflamation. There is a French Lab in Paris that has a test to find out what your neopeterin and biopeterin levels are. It is a simple urine test and I think it costs about $77. You can send an email to " contact@... " and request a urinary biopeterin/neopeterin test kit. There websit is www.labbio.net. My guess is you son has a very high neopeterin level. The correct neopeterin level should be under 180 and the biopeterin level should be at least twice that at about 400. Of ten the ASD kids have neopeterin levels in the upper hundreds and very little biopeterin. If you have low biopeterin you can supplement with BH4. You may want to join the yahoo group " chelatingkids2 " . In a nut shell from what I understand our kids have LOTS of inflammation going on, in their gut and their brains. Prednisone is a high powered anti-inflammitory drug, it may have reduced some of this allowing for better communication & focus. Many DAN doctors are working on protocols to help kids with this well known problem. Some are using Spirolactone, HBOT, pentasa and a multitude of other supplements to help with inflammation. Dr. Jerry Kartzinel was just talking about using Motrin (dye-free) for 2 weeks to see what effect it has on the child (anti-inflammation) - if there is marked improvement then they follow with other anti-inflammitory protocols. Prednisone is not good for long term because of the multitude of side-effects.Antibiotics on the other hand sometimes cut down on the gut bugs and the toxins they produce causing similar wonderful/ but brief results. It's likely the prednisone just took down some of his inflammation by artificially calming his immune system down. The message I hear from this is that your son's immune system is reacting to something and responding in an autoimmune way (attacking the body). This is quite common in autism. If that were my child I would be aggressively looking for toxicity (metals and the such), viruses, fungus, bad bacteria, and IGG reactive foods and work on improving methylation. I'm don't read every post these days and I'm preparing for the autism one conference right now so I can't walk you through it right now. What I suggest is to give all the details you can of your child's symptoms and his story and let the group respond with what they know and what they would do. Prednisone is not a drug made for long-term use. Especially in kids. Enjoy your child as much as you can, but now that you know he's in there. I would suspect he has severe inflammation that the prednisone helped. This is why some DAN! docs are using anti-inflammatories such as prednisone. There are naturals out there also. I started biomedical treatment with Dr. Usman when my son was three. He was completely gluten/casein free for years. We went through Pfeiffer Treatment Center. He was doing compounded vitamins, went through the IGG testing and we eliminated all offending foods. We also went through our yeast period and treated it with Nystatin. I stopped Pfeiffer after about three years because he was not handling the compounded vitmins well. Found out after we stopped it was the B vitamins he could not handle. They made him way too hyper. Throughout this process he did better and better everyday. He went from a baby who would not look or care to look at you, to a lovable/caring little boy. Are challenges have always been communication, social problems and repetitive behaviors. Mostly being obsessed with trains and some stimming behaviors. Tried chelation with TD-DMPS did well but someone told me it may just be the glutathione they use to mix it with so we stopped that. We took a break from it all which leads me to today. Now I am back with a vengence and with all of your help I pray I can fill in the last of the MISSING PIECES. Any help from all of my son's 'guardian angels' would be SO appreciated. Guest guest Posted May 20, 2007 Report Share Posted May 20, 2007 From my reading when someone has such a dramatic good response to Prednisone or other steroids, it means that their adrenal glands are not able to produce enough cortisol on their own. Cortisol is needed to help the body deal with stress. The prednisone is giving the body something that it needs but cannot produce in significant amounts. But, as Stan said, prednisone is not a drug that you want to use long term. The side effects are HORRENDOUS, for long term use. Their is a school of thought that hydrocortisone is a more acceptable choice for providing the needed cortisol. I have never felt comfortable with that. So for me, the approach would be to look at what can help heal the adrenal glands and give them the support they need to produce cortisol on their own. A good balanced b complex is one supplement that can help. I know of only one balanced brand at this time. Vitamin C is also helpful, because it assists the body to use the b vitamins efficiently so less are needed. Obviously, a well balanced diet, including healthy sources of fat and protein, is helpful for anyone with adrenal exhaustion. The following supplements I have read about in terms of adults with adrenal exhaustion, and I would recommend you do further research before considering them for a child. They might be ok, but I just don't know. Some use adrenal cortical extract, though this is controversial. Homeopathic adrenal cortex is preferred by many. Licorice extract also supports the adrenals, but cannot be used by anyone with high blood pressure. Of course the nutritional approach to adrenal repair does take more time, but I personally believe it is worth the wait. One of the most interesting things I discovered in my reading is that allergies can be linked to adrenal exhaustion. Also, mothers who themselves have adrenal exhaustion tend to have children with adrenal exhaustion. This is especially likely if a mother feels much better in the latter part of her pregnancy but worse after the baby is born. (From whatever adrenal related condition she might suffer, allergies, autoimmune, etc.) What happens is that the mother is recieving the cortisol produced by the unborn child's adrenal glands, via the placenta. So by the time baby is born, he or she has exhausted adrenals and is more susceptible to allergies, autoimmune disorders, etc. I hope this is helpful. When working with b vitamins it is important to have all 8 in approximately equal percentages of the RDA. When you give high doses of isolated b vitamins it increases the body's demand for the other b vitamins and can totally wreak havoc in the body. I had never thought about putting it in before because my son has never had sleep issues, but I am pretty sure it is the melatonin that is doing the very nice things we are seeing here these days. And it depends on whether you are using it for sleep issues or the antioxidant value. We gave for antioxidant value and used just 1.5 mgs, comes in a chewable from Vitamin Shoppe, very good tasting, 3 mgs and we just break in half. She is also just turned 6, 50 lbs. What we saw was increased clarity and awareness and this improvement was immediate, the following morning. She is recovered now..in a public school, no aide, doing well but this was our first clue that she needed a higher level of antioxidants. After this we also added grape seed extract and also found this helpful for clarity and awareness. I have to go back on the waiting list! I cannot wait a year! With all this new information I am ready to go. I am on a mission now and there is no stopping me. I am hoping all of you can help me through this. I would like to start with getting his neopterin levels checked. Is this a good starting point. Do I need a doctors approval for this? We have never gotten this type of response from grape seed extract, which my kid has been on for eons, so I am thinking that in our case, if this is what is doing the good things, it is doing something more/different than acting as an antioxidant. This can cause a multitude of problems. It can affect their Krebs (energy output) cycle BIG-TIME!.Medical docs are not always aware of this, naturopathic docs usually are. Also, I stopped using Pfeiffer because there was a time when alot of the kids on their compounded vitamins across the world were all reacting with rage and aggression . The parents compared notes and it all happened at the same time so something was wrong with the newly compounded vitamins the kids were taking. After much digging, it turned out that their pharmacy told me they had used a different type of DMG and I think they ended up taking it out all together after that. I was upset that I had not been told this when they put the different dmg in the product to begin with and have not used their services since. Greg Brown is the DAN! doc and all the nurses have ASD kids. One of the nurses has one recovered child (under Usman's care) and another on the way to recovery. Last fall I got in with two weeks notice but I hear the wait for new patients is up to a couple of months now. They were familiar with prednisone. I found a b complex that is balanced and I am taking it with good results, after having tried several others unsuccessfully. I'm planning to put my 5 year old on a 1/2 tab a day once he gets used to swallowing the Optiflora. If you are using the French Lab you do not need a doctor. Guest guest Posted May 21, 2007 Report Share Posted May 21, 2007 This is so frustrating to me, my son used to see Dr. Jerry and Dr. Bradstreet and two years ago when I questioned them at length about the potential use of steroids and some of the research that had been done with ASD kids with EEG abnormalities and prednisone being successful with some of these kids, I got NO FEEDBACK about its potential in any way regarding ASD. Now I hear the have gone down this road, I quit doing bio-medical for awhile due to the cookie cutter approach they were using at the time and their disinterest in the anti-inflammatory connection and possible use of steroids. I personally know two kids who had dramatic responses in their ASD symptoms to prednisone, given for unrelated medical reasons. This was the reason I was interested in the first place. Dr. Chez who used to be out of Chicago is a neurologist who uses pulse dosing of steroids for certain ASD cases, he has been doing this for years. He was chastized by many for doing this, including some of the DAN community. So it looks like some are having a change of heart.
