The Mist

I can't remember which post made me think of this, so I'm posting it here.

Just recently I watched King's "The Mist." It wasn't bad, but had an incredibly annoying character who should have been silenced earlier in the movie and the ending was sadistic even by King's standards.

I won't give away too much but I'll mention one part.

A group of people are together in a back room of the building where all these people are trapped. Outside, there are factions forming. The people are debating this.

One of the men says that the people are scared and will latch on to the first person they think can save them.

Another says that people are innately good and can't believe that any harm will come to them.

The third said that if you put two people in a room, they automatically start scheming to be in control and kill the other person. That, he says, is why people invented religion and politics.

I found these statements interesting.

The first guy was right. People in trouble will tend to jump at anyone who thinks might save them, regardless of the future cost. Its happened many, many times in human history on small and large scales.

The second may be right. many people may be born good, but I know of people who were just born bad.

The last guy was the most interesting. He is exactly right. Put a random group together and they start jockeying for position. It might take a warm up period, but it happens. Indeed in the movie, one faction was sensible and trying to survive, while other, the one that seemed to offer more hope, was turning inward and dangerous.

What I think made it so interesting was that the character who said this was a clerk at the store: a short, dumpy fellow with glasses that everyone picked on. However, he was capable of taking action and he turned out to have been a state champion pistol shot and was effective with the gun they gave him.

Wish I could remember the post that made me think of this as it would make more sense.
