Dead Sprout Seeds?

Hi

I sprouted a tray of broccoli seeds the other day, and too many seeds were " dead

in the water " (no sprouting.) It is my understanding that sprouting seeds should

be good for three years, but these were not that old.

Any suggestions? All my other type sprouts are doing their thing nicely.

Thanks, Phyllis

Hi Phillis. How ya' doin'?

Perhaps the " dead' seeds, were not seeds at all, but hulls. When the germ

emerges from the shell, it separates and it seems like there are seeds that

didn't sprout. Take some off those " dead " seeds and rub them between your

fingers. If they are really seeds, they will feel a little hard. If they are

hulls, they will be soft and slippery. Remember, even tho most people rinse away

the hulls, they are edible and are a good source of bulk in your diet.

The same thing happens to me. Before I pass judgement on Handy Pantry seeds I

got at Whole Foods Market, I will give it the EW squeeze test. Not as good as a

hug from EW , I am sure, but it may tell me something more about why so many

don't appear to sprout. Very expensive experiment.

Thanks for posting your sprout challenge. It shook me out of my complacency and

now I will look into it.

I've been told that I'm a pretty darn good hugger.
