Guest guest
ly in my opinion the Doctor was trying to do what she believed was best for the boy... assuming that the boy's growth plates had not fussed yet and he wasn't giving him extremely high doses... To go to the next level of intervention would be extremely invasive... ( Distraction osteogenesis, that is sometimes use on patients with Achondroplasia) would be excessive and be considered abusive but since it would not involve the continued use of " performance enhancing drugs " would not have been noticed by society that insists on minding every one else's business... If she had gone for the surgical option the kid would have gotten the 2-4 " enchainment whether regardless of if they pull the mom's medical license... once they install/implant the hardware to lengthen the bones they really have to complete the process... or they would leave the kid permanently crippled... And getting an extra year or so of regular growth in addition to the lengthening would put him on a more level field with his peers... And get he kid a trainer to help him build some muscle to go with the height... Ender... Rehab Al Jumaily, 51, who is 5 feet tall, feared her 13-year-old son would be bullied if he ended up as short as the rest of his family. The teenager, who is 5 feet 2 inches tall and not being named because of legal reasons, has been bullied once at school. Al Jumaily, a partner in a West Hull, England, surgery practice, admitted she used fake names to write prescriptions for the growth hormone drug Genetropin, which she injected into her son, the Mail reported. Al Jumaily, of Dunswell, England, told a court she and her husband are short and their 16-year-old daughter, who is 4 feet 11-inches tall, had stopped growing at the age of 11, the story says. Al Jumaily received a fine and was to appear before the General Medical Council to determine if she is fit to continue practicing medicine, the Mail reported. Guest guest
There is a difference between what is right for the child and what the parent's think is right for the child. So the kid might turn out to be shorter than average. That wouldn't be a problem if people still didn't have a caveman way of looking at things. I don't have a problem with my height, which is 5'4". I don't need to eat as much as bigger people, I don't take up as much space and I'm sure I get better gas mileage that the bigger folks. The problem is that other people have problems with my height. They seem to feel that just because their eyes angle down when they look at me that I am of less value than they are, just like because my eyes angle up, I'm supposed to think they are superior to me. It is amusing that when I was in high school and when I first went to college I was this same height but skinny. People tended to give me a lot of trouble, even right in my face. Later, after I finally put on weight via weight training (for years I couldn't put on an ounce no matter what I tried), people would leave me alone even though I'm still short. I know they still think less of me, they just won't say it now because they think I could hurt them if they did. Still get the same attitude, just not as openly. Anyway, this is another sore subject. My father looked into getting me on growth hormones but fortunately my pediatrician told him that I didn't need them. Xrays did show that my growth plates were normal and that I would be about the height I currently am. Growth hormones would have done me a lot of harm. Still, my father tried for a while to get me on them anyway. Just another close call at his hands. ly in my opinion the Doctor was trying to do what she believed was best for the boyGas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Guest guest
I'm not suggesting the kid try to get big enough to fight the bully just to be average enough to not have a target painted on his back... When you stand out in a crowd you get noticed and when a bully notices you; you appear to be easy prey they will attack... Being near average and to be able to feel, and act (or at least buff) that you can take care of yourself will turn off most causal bullies.. with out the need for a confrontation... Guest guest
This is true. That is why I dress kind of blue collar so I blend in more around here and most other places I go. If I dressed GQ or in a suit and tie, I would attract attention, not to mention being very uncomfortable. Like I said in the other post, I don't get much trouble these days because I'm muscular. I tend to walk with a little confidence and I'm generally aware of what is going on around me, without staring at people and all that. I also avoid the more troublesome looking people without appearing to, which helps a lot. Mostly though blending in and watching out for trouble and being somewhere else when it comes works out well. Guest guest
" ly in my opinion the Doctor was trying to do what she believed was best for the boy.. " COULD be, but... Two questions: 1) Why did she not take him to another doctor who would prescribe the necessary drug? I am postulating that the British National Healthcare System would not pay for the drug or treatment because the boy's height was not causing any physical problems, and so she took matters into her own hands. 2) Why did she feel the need to take maters into her own hands ANYWAY??? Rephrased: Why would it matter whether or not the kid was short? The answer is twofold: 1) Kids and adults who are short are discrimated against and bullied, and witnessing this happening with her child, she wanted to take steps to prevent a lifetime of this sort of thing, and 2) Perhaps she herself, though short, bears some grudge against those who are not tall. In other words, what she hates in herself, she persecutes in her child. 's indignation over this issue is justified. I had one friend who was about a foot shorter than I in elementary school. Now grown, he is a foot and a half shorter than I. This friends entire family (save his sister and one brother) was short. His mother, father, and one brother had to sit on telephone books to drive cars. They encountered a lot of discrimination and bullying when I knew them. They endured it, and they all loved themselves for who they were, but I am sure they have sometimes wished that they could be taller because they knew you could not change tall people's inherent prejudices against shorter people. I daresay we ALL have a degree of prejudice, if not morbid curiosity about short people. Anyone who is more than three feet tall and who has ever seen a migit or a dwarf has probably done a double-take upon seeing them. Irhink what this woman did was wrong. In effect, she was abusing her medical license. But I can see the " why " of it IF her reason was to spare her kid the persecution she endured through most of her life. If her reasoning is that she resented her kid, then her reasons were appalling. Administrator

Guest guest
I agree that what the child wants and what the parent wants and things is right for the child are not the same thing... It is entirely possible and probable that a 13 yo boy would know about HGH and be begging his parents for it and other " performance enhancing drugs " as a way to deal with peer abuse... and low dosage HGH would have minimal risks for a healthy 13 yo... As you suggest the choice on whether to intervene is a judgement call in most cases and currently in the US a matter of if the parents can afford the cost (or at least the co-pay) for the treatment. I'm 5'5 " and for the most part I don't have a problem with it... To be taller than average would be much more of a pain than where I am... I fit in coach airline seats and the back seat of most any car... but I do sometimes need to use the bottom or on rare occasion the first shelf as a step to reach the top shelf at the supermarket... The most annoying thing is buying clothes... my legs a shorter than my 65 " would suggest so even if/when I go anorexic buying pants off the shelf is hard... as is finding jackets that don't make me look like a kid wearing my big brother or dad's coat... I was always shorter than my peers and to make it worse I had problems with my weight, short and chubby is the kiss of death even if you have a completely normal nervous system. But even as high functioning as I am for the most past I could avoid being a target of opportunity to any one with a frustration they wanted to take out on someone that couldn't/wouldn't fight back... The kid were bad but they for the most part didn't know better. The adults that and a needed to attack a kid to boost their own ego deserve a special hell of the own... By third year of High School I had discovered that it was easier to not eat when I didn't have my parent to insist I eat... and that made my lunch money available to buy electron parts and books... And I lost like 30lbs... In retrospect that is likely where I screwed myself out of an inch or to length in my legs and arms... By then the only people that still delighted in attacking me were the PE instructors and few teachers that coach the athletic teams in addition or teaching... I just noticed I drifted off topic badly sorry... But I have been in need of venting for a while... forgive me... I'd delete it but then it wouldnt be vented... My point was if the rest of the world didn't work to make life unpleasant (by commission and omission) for people that are in some way different from the norm it would be a much nicer place to life... But there are nearly 500000000 year of evolutions driving all life forms to seek to eliminate any thing the is not that life form... In short the life form that best endure and propagate despite of the pollution and other hazards caused by life forms that are " not them " will be the master of it's environment Ender At 09:39 PM 6/27/2008, VISIGOTH wrote: There is a difference between what is right for the child and what the parent's think is right for the child. Guest guest
I agree with everything you said. I rarely have problems fitting into seats and even coach seating on the airlines wasn't too bad. The private compartments, or first class, on Amtrak are typically small, roughly 3.5 by 6.5 feet, but were comfortable for me, though I would frequently get up and walk the corridors. Clothes can also be a problem for me, too. I was short and skinny growing up. That's wasn't any fun either, particularly because it made me look even smaller than I really was. I caught a lot of grief on many levels for it. Most of humanity physically left the caves eons ago, but the caves have not yet moved out of them. My point was if the rest of the world didn't work to make life unpleasant (by commission and omission) for people that are in some way different from the norm it would be a much nicer place to life...
