Hi All!

I need advice from the "been there, done that" gang.

How did your kids get past the anxiety of handwriting? Freddie sees a piece of paper and pencil and he immediately starts to have behavior issues. His nose crinkles up and the no word comes out of left field. I get that it is difficult for him and that he doesn't feel successful with it yet - so the anxiety kicks in. What I need are ideas on how to get past that anxiety and onto enjoying it. We are already working with white boards and the computer. I just don't want Freddie thinking he's going to get away with this for life.

Freddie does GREAT in reading and the more successful he is the more excited he is about participating in the classroom reading program. I just need help getting him there with the writing. I know this too shall pass, so I am not asking for a when will it happen just a how can I help him along to make it happen (successfully).

Right now we work with HWT, grease pencils on Plexiglas or plastic covers, lots of painting, lots of fine motor games and crafts, we have a great plexiboard out back so Freddie can spray bottle paint and wipe away with a squeegee, dry erase board and pens, computer and all kinds of other stuff that slips my mind right now.

Hoping to hear back from some experienced parents!

Thanks all. As usual, these are the first places I run to for advice!

Love, adore and couldn't make it a day without you all!!!

Mac, still at age 11, isn't big on writing unless it is something of major interest to him. He CAN write--far from perfect, but legible--but will often still "refuse" unless we come up with something motivating--if he's not interested he can fill a whole page with lines and lines of scribbles. Friend's names and Spiderman are good starters for us. I've also used photos from birthday parties, etc...to encourage him to write words/sentences to go with the pictures. Often (still) it is us together brainstorming the sentence, me writing it and him copying what I've written. I'll be anxious to hear what others suggest.
