Growing microgreens

Hi all,

Let me tell you how I grow microgreens. Whenever I am out and about and need to

eat, I stop at a fast food restaurant called Carl's Jr. - known as Hardees in

the east. I can buy a side salad for under two bucks. The container from the

salad makes a perfect little growing vessel. I punch three holes in the bottom

and fill one third full of a moist mix of 1/2 perlite and 1/2 coir. If you can't

find coir, peat will do. I use coir because it is a renewable resource. I cover

the medium with sunflower seeds that have been soaking for at least 12 hours. It

is not necessary to pre-soak, but they will germinate two days sooner if you do.

Now I cover the medium with just a thin covering of the same mix. I do the same

thing for pea shoots. The reason for filling only one third full is that the

seeds will push up the soil and it will spill out. If I were to grow beets or

something with smaller seeds, I would put more soil medium in the bowl. The lid

from the salad bowl makes a perfect saucer for the bowl of growing goodies.

Very clever, EW-great way to recycle, and since it had food in it to start with,

it would be food grade plastic.
