Artichoke is basically a weed in the thistle family. The only part of it that

is edible is the globe, and then really a small part of that.

The artichoke plant has a lot of thorns and spines on it. Even though eating

the sprouts would not be harmful, they might be scratchy. I have grown

artichokes before, for my wife. I do not like them. It's too much work for such

a little reward. I think my wife only eats them for the butter sauce.

I don't grow them any more because they attract aphids in to the heads, then

the ants come to 'milk' the aphids. They are nearly impossible to clean before

eating.

Commercially, they are sprayed very heavily to prevent the bugs. I am organic

and do use poison sprays.

Are there Artichoke Sprouts????

My landlord (who is now sprounting lentils), just asked me " Melody I was

wondering, can we sprout artichokes? "

I then said " Well, some seeds can be sprouted like I sprout my broccoli, in my

round green trays, and other seeds need a medium, like in soil or some other

medium, but I'll ask my friends on the Sprout Message boards "

So friends.

What's the answer? I tried going to sproutpeople.com an I even went to google

and asked this question, but I couldn't understand the answers.

So I'm asking the sprout experts. You!!!

Thanks much

Melody

Thanks SO much. I shall pass on your knowledge of artichoke sprouts to my

landlord.

Melody

P.S. I just put up a batch of the French Garden. It came yesterday. Cannot wait

to sprout these beauties. Got me some broccoli too!!

And Alan ( I think he got scared when he got sick), said to me today. From now

on, I want to eat like you, no more knishes, I want sprouts every day.

Gave him a lovely sprout salad, and some Chicken Broth. and a light veggie

sandwich.

He's much better but isn't it a hoot that he actually ASKED to eat healthy. Dr.

Fred will be so pleased.

Beverly.

Not only will I research it, I'll probably buy it for him.

I take SilverBiotics (one tsp) every single day.

I'm 64, my diabetes is STRICTLY controlled because of my diet and because I take

a small amount of Lantus every night before bedtime. I don't have to do this. I

could take a pill but insulin gives the pancreas a break, it doesn't have to

work so hard, I've discussed this with other diabetics, my doctor, etc, and I

was in a diabetic protocol at Cornell Medical Center and I learned LOADS about

diabetes.

So far, it's 7 years later, and I'm good. I plan on STAYING GOOD as long as I

can.

Not to brag but I haven't had any infection of ANY kind in over 15 years and I

don't know any diabetics who can say that.

I don't do anything artificial and plan on doing the same for the rest of my

life.

I am right now going to look into olive leaf extract.

And I thank you very very much.

I want to tell you something I do for all of us. We take Olive Leaf

Extract. Research it. It builds up your immune system and all kind of

other things. My husband and I also have neuropathy and my husband has non

Hodgkins Lymphoma from being in the Viet nam war and compromised immune

system, etc. About 8 years ago I was just praying for what to do for our

health and found out about OLE. It is truly a God send. My husband used to

get sinus imfections all the time and was always on antibiotics. Since his

cancer is in his immune system, it had shut down. He was weak and tired and

sick all the time. Now he is much better, outside stringing electricity to

the livestock barn right now. He has not had a sinus infection or been on

an antibiotic in over 6 years. His cancer doctor is doing a mini study on

him. His cancer is not acting up. We were told in Dec 1999 he had 6 mon -

2 years to live, he was stage 4. He did go through chemo, that almost

killed him. That's when I decided to find out how to make him better.

Sorry to ramble, but I've been praying about what to say to you about Alan

being ill, and this just keeps coming into my head.

Hey EW,

I was thinking that the artichoke sprout because it is tiny would not be

toughened up enough to be scratchy. I believe we have had posts from people

trying to sprout Milk Thistle. So I was thinking what about Cardoon, a close

relative of the artichoke with an artichoke flavor and the stems are eaten

rather than just the flower bud. The problem that I see with either Cardoon or

Artichoke would be finding enough untreated seed to even test this. I don't

think that Melody realizes that in one weeks time she probably uses enough seed

to start a good sized market garden.

OOOHHH I have to ask a question.

This Cardoon you are talking about. Is this the same thing that we Italians call

" Gordoonas?? " I grew up with my family taking dipping this in egg, breadcrumbs

and frying it. Then we could put it between two slices of italian break and we

went to town.

Now I can't tell you what the original looked like because I only saw it AFTER

it was cooked. I went to work and I came home for supper.

And when my parents moved to Florida and I went to visit, my Aunt Sally (who is

still alive and 88), used to make the Caroonas and I remember saying " OMG, we're

having Cardoonas? and I remember asking her once " what is the real name of

this " ?

And she said " I think it's Burdock "

that I remember clearly, she called it Burdock "

So is this what you are talking about. OMG, I remember LOVING this on a

sandwich.

Burdock is another thistle in the same family as cardoon and artichoke. I've

also heard that Italians call artichokes cardoonas. The burdock root (long and

slender; called gobo) is used in Japanese cooking, but I heard that the young

stems and the flower stalk can also be eaten. Burdock grows like a weed all over

this country so I imagine a food forager would have no trouble finding it in the

spring. When I would go on my nature hikes I remember spending twenty minutes

finding and pulling off the burs that were stuck to my clothes, just brush

against that mature plant and those seed pods would attach themselves very

firmly.

Oh, how exciting. I'm learning about thistles. And in my house we never called

Artichokes by any other name but artichokes.

My mother used to stuff them with breadcrumbs and cheese and parsley.

OMG, they were wonderful.

I'm going to be careful and not buy regular artichokes from now on because in

one of the posts I read that they use a lot of pesticides when they grow these.

No more of that for me. Haven't had one in a long time anyway.

Hi. Not only do they make the True Orange, but you MUST try the True raspberry

lemonade. It has to be the BEST thing I have ever drank in my entire life.

I can only get that online. But....in my local Shoprite they do sell the True

lemonade so I bought seven packages and that is what we now drink.

Because Alan likes anything with Pineapple, I buy some unsweetened Pineapple

juice and add just a little bit to his drink and he goes nuts.

At least he's off the Diet Rite soda with Splenda.

And I buy the Silverbiotics both online and locally.

I bought the last bottle at GNC and it was on sale for $16 and change so I

grabbed it.

I take some every day. I think that this is why I'm alive.

It's really my worst vice since trying to eat healthier.

Hi, I used to get it from the Vitamin Shop because it was close to me. But

it was high. My friend orders from Swanson Vitamins online and got me a

catalog. I have been using them for over 1 year and am very happy. The

price is better and a couple of times a year they have it buy 1 get 1 free,

limit 3. Go to their website and sign up for emals and you will get the

specials sent to you.

We use the 500 mg and take 2 am & 2 pm, and we take more through the day if

we feel sniffles coming on. We will take 2 more maybe once or twice

throughout the day. The sniffles don't last a couple of days and it has not

gotten any further than sniffles. My husband used to always get sick

several times in the winter and get the flu even though he had the shot.

Not now. And my 16 year old daughter and I don't take the flu shot and she

has never had the flu and I haven't since I was younger.

Ramble again, hope this helps.
