Guest guest
In my opinion, because it's made from a plant, no one an patent it. That's what I read anyway. And if you can't patent it, you can't PROFIT from it. Like the ones who make Nutrasweet, Splenda, etc. They don't want us to grow our own foods, grow plants, be self sufficient, etc. They want us DEPENDENT on them. Just my opinion. Melody > > Why has there been so much controversy concerning Stevia, a very useful herb with such great health benefits? Stevia was used in the United States in the 1980's as a sweetener. Celestial Seasonings, one of the world's largest herbal tea companies used it as a flavoring in many of their teas until 1986, when without warning the FDA raided their warehouse and seized their entire stock of Stevia. The FDA gave no reason for this action; the company was simply told they could no longer use Stevia in their teas. > Prior to the 1980's Stevia was on the FDA's GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) list. Strangely, it was removed from that list at the same time Aspartame entered the scene and saccharin was found to be a carcinogen. In 1991 the FDA banned Stevia, claiming (as it still does) that it was an " unsafe food additive, " even though it has been used extensively in South America, Japan, China, Germany, Malaysia, Israel, and South Korea, and is available in many other countries. Stevia extracts are used in the Far East as a sweetener in items produced by American companies, such as Diet Coke and sugar free versions of Wrigley's gum and Beatrice Foods Yogurts, as well as for its therapeutic value. The FDA was forced to lift the ban on Stevia due to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. Since that time Stevia has been legal in the U.S., but only if specifically labeled as a dietary supplement. It cannot be used commercially in food products as a sweetener or labeled as a sweetener. In 1998, the FDA made a raid on a Stevia producer located in Texas and attempted to burn all of the books in their warehouse. One book relays the story of FDA's suppression of Stevia and another is a cookbook, which makes use of Stevia as a sweetener, not a supplement. There has been much speculation about the FDA's actions and policies concerning this beneficial herb, but evidence points to the very real probability that these things are the result of lobbying pressure exerted by chemical companies producing synthetic sugar substitutes. > > > > >
Guest guest
I don't use stevia or artificial sweeteners because of their effect on the environment. They (along with psychotropic meds) are found in the water table as contaminants. I did a good amount of research on this and we decided in my house to avoid stevia and the artificial sweeteners. I don't go nuts with this, so if stevia is in something I eat, I eat it. I find saccharin to be absolutely scary and I will not eat things containing that. Xylitol and sorbitol made me sick (there are plenty of warnings about their potential effects on the gut), so I don't eat this ever. Accidentally had a few cough drops containing sorbitol and my stomach really hurt. Not telling anyone else what to do just explaining what I do. I also find the behavior of the FDA suspect. Guest guest
Dr. You need to do a little more research. Stevia is not an artificial product. It is a plant native to So. America. It is no different than the sprouts you grow. Just sweeter. As a diabetic, it is better for me that sugar. And far better than any of the artificial junk they put in food today. Guest guest
I bought Stevia seeds from a seed company that only sells heirloom and organic seeds, but some how I misplaced them. I was going to start them this spring, but alas, I will miss out until next year. Be sure to keep us informed on your plant and how you use the leaves. My wife and her sister are making apricot jam from the sister's tree and today, and I get some this year because they are going to make me a batch using stevia. ew Re: Stevia info i am glad you said something EW... Guest guest
Hi Patti,  I got my seeds (only 12 in the package) from www.blackbirdnaturals.com They are certified organic as well. I planted 3 seeds in each of two pods in the AG on June 8. One appears not to have sprouted at all, but the other is now about 1 " tall. Still quite delicate looking, but holding its own! In the pod that didn't sprout, I planted 3 basil seeds a few days ago and they are already almost at 1/2 " . Of course, in the very beginning, one plant looks much like another, and I'm not positive whether it's the basil coming up or a late blooming stevia!  I am in southern California. Our soil is clay and must be amended in order to grow anything. I have a lemon tree, lime tree, and several rosebushes in the back yard, but all had deep holes dug and filled with amended soil. They are all thriving. Planting veggies in the open garden is a lot more work (I did this many years ago - too backbreaking at this time in my life!), so I'm using grow boxes (3 Earth Boxes and two City Pickers from Home Depot). One Earthbox now contains plumeria so is not available for veggies. I tried growing mint as a carpet under the plumeria, but wasn't diligent about watering and the mint died. Will try again though. I had two beautiful lemon cucumber plants starting in the AG and killed them in trying to transplant to the grow box. I'm pretty sure I didn't have the correct potting mix, so must now fix that and then try growing the cukes from seed directly in the box. Hope it works as I used cucumbers in my green juice every day. I rely on the Farmer's Market a lot!  Thanks for posting - I wish you luck with your stevia and would be interested in its progress and anything else you may be growing. You may have seen my previous posts about other things I plan to try - carrots, kale, arugula, beets, spinach, etc. Some are cool weather crops. All are organic and many are heirloom. I don't want to waste these precious seeds. I soak up any advice EW posts - and anyone else with expertise in gardening!  Peggy    To: " sproutpeople " <sproutpeople > Sent: Wednesday, June 29, 2011 12:45 PM Subject: Re: Stevia info  COOL!
