Hmmm, imagine if we could turn our restriction on and off like a

tap.

Going for a big meal tonight? No probs, let's just take out all our

fill shall we and stuff ourselves stupid at the all you can eat

buffet. Doh! Reality check! Isn't that why we got our bands in

the first place?

Hey girls, are you dying to fit into that glamorous dress for that

important function next month? No probs, let's just tighten it up

shall we? In fact why not close it up all together? Then next

month, everyone can point at you and say " Oh my God! It's a

shrivelled up prune wearing a glamorous dress! "

A lap band is like a chastity belt. Imagine the mischief we'd get

up to if we were allowed to hang on to the key ;) .

Keep smiling, love Rosie.

about stopping the thread, but about not wanting to put ideas into

the minds of people who don't understand either the difficulty of

fills or the danger of your suggestion.

> Most, though not all surgeons, bulk bill for fills and so

patients don't have out of pocket expenses. It isn't about fees in

most instances, though I can't speak for all surgeons here. The

correct needle being used is also vital and these needles cost about

$10.00 each.

> Personally, I am not qualified to do fills as a nurse. If there

was an emergency for a fill removal, yes, I would be able to do it.

However, the risks involved make me very hesitant to even attempt

it. Puncturing the tubing or damaging the port would mean that the

patient would need to have this part of the prosthesis replaced and

for some, this may even mean a complete new band. I am not prepared

to take that risk on another patient.

> You don't realise the full impact of what you are suggesting,

however we will have to agree to disagree on this subject. It is

dangerous and we on this site do not condone any person doing their

own fills. We actively discourage this and it has nothing to do

with cost for us.

>

> An infection at your port site can potentially lead to an

infected port and an infection travelling to the area of the band

and if this happens, it will almost certainly eventuate in the

removal of your band.

> We cannot stop people doing what they choose to do, but we can

advise people against behaviour which is risky. This advice is

simply advice. Your surgeon would be very much against this

practice - whether they bulk bill or not.

> I am saying it again - we do not condone any patient attempting

to fill their own bands. The implications and the potential damage

you can do may be irreversible.

> While I respect youre opinion and your proported experience,of

which I dont doubt! I find it a bit hard to understand why you would

to stop the thread. Some maybe agast at the thought of sticking a

needle in your self and some are not.I was not jokeing, and am

thinking of training myself to do such a proceedure. It seems at this

stage straight forward. If one obeys all the basic commonsence things

like new correct equipment(paramount). Can feel the device and hold

it still, have xrays of its positioning have read and studied all

manuals of the device. There is no reason why It cant be done by self

admin.I do agree that this shouldnt be taken lightly and not

atempted by just anyone as some maybe dont have the skill, but all

skills can be taken up.Yes people develop addiction to weight loss

and there are lots of things open to abuse in this day and age, that

is the choice of an individuals mind, and all proceedures should not

be taken lightly. But with the costs of all the fills

> and

> the 200+ bucks one has to pay a doctor to put a few mils of saline

in It would be worth it.I am sure as It (lap banding) evolves in due

course it will be common to self admin this situation(and some wont

be considering it) at this stage. One also have to take into acount

locality ,if it is 3000k's from the nearest medical centre or if one

is to busy to make it to one appointment then it is a must to

consider doing this.It is put in by a surgeon for sure ,but it is

not beyond us thinking of topping it up ourselves, and it has to at

some stage be talked about.Or is it about doctors and nurses and the

protection of their massive earnings and to keep the poor paying for

pills procedures ect
