Guest guest
Not sure whether the aluminum would leach into the soil, but I am SO off aluminum that I have replaced my baking powder with the non-aluminum stuff, I've thrown away all my aluminum pans (unless they are clad with stainless steel), and I don't even use aluminum foil in or next to anything I will eat unless I have a barrier (like parchment paper) between it and the food. And I don't know if parchment paper can stop any aluminum-leaching that might occur. I avoid aluminum as much as I can. I am currently on a tear re. the chemtrails that I see everywhere and every day here in So. Cal since I read that aluminum oxide is one of the products in those trails. I don't want to be breathing any more of that stuff than I absolutely have to. Don't get me started... So, FWIW, I'm with you re. aluminum near or on the soil. Peggy ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2012 6:03 AM Subject: Am I incorrect in giving that advice about aluminum  I just posted a message saying I would never use aluminum to sprout in, then I realized there is soil in the buffet thing. Guest guest
I just checked mine, Clabber Girl and it has Sodium Aluminum Sulfate as an additive. Did some research and if taken in small doses it isn't harmful to humans..but large doses it is. Time to rethink what's in my pantry. Thank you Peggy and Melody!! Guest guest
If you can't find aluminum free baking powder, it is very easy to make your own-just mix two parts cream of tartar (I use McCormicks brand in the glass bottle) 1 part baking SODA, and just a pinch of corn or tapioca starch to keep it from clumping together-store in a glass mason jar. Guest guest
I'm just happy I learned about aluminum in baking powder. I also looked around my kitchen and found a lot of disposable aluminum baking pans that I use to roast chickens, bake this, etc. Not any more. I'm going to take out my pyrex from now on Mel
Guest guest
No need to buy http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Homemade-Baking-Powder-241653 1/4 cup of cream of tartar 2 tablespoons baking soda (or as reference, the ratio is 2 parts cream of tartar (tartaric acid) 1 part baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) > > > > Yes, unless you specifically buy the ones without. > > P > > > > From: Melody <eliz7212@> > > Reply-To: <sproutpeople > > > Date: Wed, 08 Feb 2012 13:50:10 -0000 > > To: <sproutpeople > > > Subject: Re: Am I incorrect in giving that advice > > about aluminum > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Baking Powder has aluminum? Guest guest
A very good baking powder substitute can be made by mixing one part baking soda to two parts cream of tartar. Use the same amount of this mix as you would " regular " baking powder. Go for it! Aluminum and plastic both terrify me. ~Meghan in Montana > Baking Powder has aluminum? Guest guest
One more thing: I never put cornstarch into my baking powder mix because I know full well it comes from GMO corn. I may well be WAY more insanely picky than everyone else, but that's my two cents....and I've never had any clumping issues, either....good luck, everyone! Guest guest
Meghan, Try buying your cornstarch at Whole Foods or Sprouts Farm Markets ew Re: Re: Am I incorrect in giving that advice about aluminum One more thing: I never put cornstarch into my baking powder mix because I know full well it comes from GMO corn. Guest guest
Ha! I live forty miles from the nearest town, which is TINY. I could probably order it online but as I eat a high raw diet I really only use the baking powder for my husband's biscuits, cakes, et cetera. Thanks for the tip, though! > Meghan, > Try buying your cornstarch at Whole Foods or Sprouts Farm Markets > ew > > Re: Re: Am I incorrect in giving that advice about aluminum > > One more thing: I never put cornstarch into my baking powder mix because I know full well it comes from GMO corn. Guest guest
Thanks. I read where EW does not use cornstarch. The next time I make a batch, I'm going to follow his lead. He knows about GMO and non-GMO. I learned from him. lol Melody > > > Subject: Re: Am I incorrect in giving that advice about aluminum > To: sproutpeople > Date: Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 3:35 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > Guess what Melody did today?? Guest guest
I also won't use GMO, and I don't use corn anything (allergic) I use organic tapioca starch in place of cornstarch, but more often just make small batches that don't need an anti caking agent. Guest guest
Sorry, Mel, I do use cornstarch. I just buy organic at Sprouts Farmer's Market. Cornstarch is great as a thickening agent. ew Re: Am I incorrect in giving that advice about aluminum > > To: sproutpeople%40yahoogroups.com > > Date: Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 3:35 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Guess what Melody did today??
