Guest guest
Ccongrdulations MEL! You got the exact thing you wanted. You need to reconstitue one of those bricks at a time. I don't think you can break off a piece, but you can try. Keep the extra reconstitued coir in a closed container. It won't go bad, but it will dry up. No big deal, just wet it again. I am personnaly ashamed of the clerk at Lowes. ... ew I went to Lowes AND Home Depot today Boy do I have a funny story about what happened today. I was in Kings Plaza with my husband and what do I see on the next corner? Lowes and Home Depot. Now if you think I wasn't going snooping over there for Coir, then you don't know me. I parked my husband in the place to eat Pizza, got him two slices, told him, see you later, and off I went. I go into Lowes. It's a GARDEN PLACE, RIGHT?? I simply said to one of the people. I need a soil less medium to grow some greens, do you have Coir? He looked at me like I was nuts and said " You want what?? " I said " Well, this is a garden place, right? don't you have Coir, it's made from Coconuts, I want to grow my greens? " He looks at me and says " You want to grow stuff with coconuts " ?? I simply said " Please get me a manager " . He gets me a manager, I go into my spiel with the Coir and they all look at me like I'm nuts. I try and find it myself and they are following me, and I found some baskets with the sign that said " Natural Coconut liner " . I said " see, this is coconut liners " . One of the guys says: 'Coconuts???' I then announce. " I " m going to Home Depot " and off I went. I go into Home Depot which is HUGE like Lowes and I stated my wishes to the first salesperson who looked at me like I lost my mind. I then said " What aisle is your gardening supplies " ? She said " Aisle 33 " . I march to aisle 33 and on the left (before I hit Aisle 33) there were plants and Miracle grow stuff but no coconut coir. I then go near where the big sign said " Gardening " and I run into a sales man who I then give my spiel about Coconuts and Coir. He shakes his head and says " You grow stuff with coconuts? " I then asked to see his growing medium stuff. He brings me over to a stand with all the burpee stuff and gets all excited and says 'Oh, look at this it's little pods and it says COCONUT on the package. I did see indeed that it was little growing pods but I said " No I need a pad of coir or a brick, that's it, I need a brick. Well, he goes looking, starts yelling at the top of his lungs and says 'Look!! Look " , Brick and it says Coconut fiber " . Didn't say Coir but by that time I was so excited I almost threw my arms around him. I looked him dead in the face and said " I love you " . And he burst out laughing. Cost me all of $2.47. May I present the brick (I hope this is Coir or close to it). lol, Melody
Guest guest
Thank you EW. I couldn't understand the people at Lowe's either, and the people at Home Depot weren't that swift either. But who cares. I NOW HAVE COCONUT FIBER. If I break off half of one of the bricks, how much water do I use? Thanks much Melody
Guest guest
Use half of whatever volume the label says to use for the full brick. And I agree with EW, I don't think you can break it in half (at least I couldn't break mine). But I added the full volume of water called for, and used as much of the resulting coir as I needed for my sunnies. The stuff in the bucket stayed moist for a week or so, and now has dried up again. When I need more for my sunnies, I just add the dry coir to the pie plate and then water it gently and wait for the water to distribute evenly. Then I add the soaked seeds and grow... HTH, and glad you found it! Peggy ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Thursday, March 1, 2012 6:16 PM Subject: Re: I went to Lowes AND Home Depot today  Thank you EW. Guest guest
On the wrapper it should tell you how much water for each half. If you cut a half in half, use half the water. ew Re: I went to Lowes AND Home Depot today Thank you EW. Guest guest
EW: It says 4 1/2 quarts of water for two bricks. That would make 2 1/4 quarts of water for one brick and 1 and 1/8 quart of water for half of a brick right?? Did I get this right? Math has never been a strong suit of mine. I gather if I fill one small mason jar to the top with water, that would do it for half a brick? Melody > > On the wrapper it should tell you how much water for each half. Guest guest
The Lowe's here is a bunch of jerks and we are all boycotting them. I say here, but actually it is in Santa Fe. A friend is remodeling her home and she bought cabinets to completely replace all the cabinets in her kitchen - a tidy sum. Lower delivered them damaged. It is 35 mountain miles, steep grades, tight curves. The cabinets probably were damaged on route by not being anchored properly on their delivery truck. Lowe's refused to make good on the cabinets so my friend bought all new cabinets from Home Depot. She lost a lot of money so who wants to deal with a store like that any more? Guest guest
I called the head mathematician for sproutpeople group and she says that you're right on the money. However, don't use a mason jar. The brick expanses three times its size. ew Re: I went to Lowes AND Home Depot today EW: It says 4 1/2 quarts of water for two bricks. Guest guest
As I read the mason jar idea I thought the same thing and my foggy late night brain just moved numbly to the next email...thanks EW for pointing that out Jane > I called the head mathematician for sproutpeople group and she says > that you're right on the money. > However, don't use a mason jar. Guest guest
I wasn't talking about mixing the stuff in the mason jar, I was talking about the water in the mason jar (to the top) which would approximate 1 1/8 quarts of WATER. Then I would pour this over half a brick (in a big bowl), reconsitute it and THEN START MY PLANTING. Hoorah!!!! lol Melody > > > I called the head mathematician for sproutpeople group and she says > > that you're right on the money. > > However, don't use a mason jar.
