Guest guest
WOW --- Ouch!!!!....Debra, Obviously my response offended you...it was not my intent. For this I'm sad...I'm sorry. I know Kellie well and should have let her respond...just sort of doing what friends do...it was innocent. I promise I'll try harder not to next time...truly. .. e To: autismbehaviorproblems Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2009 4:31:44 PMSubject: "Behavioral" e, Thanks for your thoughtful response. I know the term "behavioral" is sometimes misunderstood. Everything that can be observed and measured is "behavior." So, almost everything we voluntarily do (ourselves, our kids) could be considered "strictly behavioral." And while we employ "behavioral" interventions for "behaviors," (in the realm of autism especially it is predominantly what are considered "challenging behaviors") -- our children, as you know, are very complex and many times there are complex reasons for behaviors. I think what you're saying is that the hypothesis for that child is that his behavior is under operant (voluntary) versus respondent (involuntary) control and therefore can be reduced by operant conditioning (rather than a medical condition). I'm glad to hear the problem was solved. I hope I didn't imply that the mom didn't know her child well. Sorry if I offended her. -Debra To: AutismBehaviorProbl emsyahoogroups (DOT) comFrom: ljdjd1234yahoo (DOT) comDate: Tue, 24 Feb 2009 07:03:58 -0800Subject: Re: gagging/belching Hi, Debra...while this may be the case for many children it is not the case where is concerned (Kellie's boy)...it is strictly behavioral.. .She's got it covered now, and has recieved lots of advice as far as how to treat it behavioraly. .. Our kids sadly don't fit a certain mold. Some of gagging is due to Reflux, for sure...and it always needs to be ruled out first. ... Kellie is a terrific mom who knows her 8 yr old child to a T...She ruled out everything before addressing it. Thankfully for her it is almost a done deal. my child does not have acid reflux...he has been to doctors, I'm an MD girl lol. My point is this...always check with your doctor first, but gaging is not always an indicator of reflux, it can also be a sensory thing...it is so with my child. e From: Debra White <debrawhite2128@ hotmail.com>To: autismbehaviorprobl emsyahoogroups (DOT) comSent: Tuesday, February 24, 2009 8:28:48 AMSubject: gagging/belching .. I truly have learned a better way of explaining what I need to explain regarding my own child... Knowing these terms and how to use them correctly is going to help me a bunch. Guest guest
Again thanks for the clarification of the proper use of the term. I prefer to just write as I would speak and not worry about the proper definition and use of these terms. I think most people knew what I meant by behavioral versus physical issues without such a detailed description. Yes the issues are pretty much gone.
