Guest guest
jen, you did an awesome workout today!!! i am so proud of you. wow, on your weights for CLX PC1. i still dont get why i cant lift as heavy on these workouts, but everyone is different i guess ::shrug:: i still dont know what i did wrong. oh well. i just wanted to congratulate you and give you a ::high ten:: !!!! :*carolyn. Guest guest
Remember Carolyn, that you are also overall " smaller " than Jen. It is factual that bigger people can lift heavier than smaller regardless of build. I mean, you don't have to be pure muscle to be strong when you are bigger. Hmm... am I making sense?? Guest guest
That is interesting I guess you have to look at it as an overall percentage of your body weight - my chiro said that as well - when talking about me getting a cart to carry my laptop and files - he mentioned that b/c of my weight the percentage of those items compared w/ my weight is really high and that carrying stuff on my shoulders or in a backpack would not be good for me!Donna jen, you did an awesome workout today!!! i am so proud of you. wow, on your weights for CLX PC1. i still dont get why i cant lift as heavy on these workouts, but everyone is different i guess ::shrug:: i still dont know what i did wrong. oh well. i just wanted to congratulate you and give you a ::high ten:: !!!!:*carolyn. Guest guest
I'm thinking this means having more body weight (regardless of what makes up that weight) gives you perhaps more force behind the lifts because you can put your body weight behind it???? Guest guest
Hmmm... I would assume having more body weight would be helpful with some exercises because you could put the weight behind what you're lifting????? I can't think of examples though. Am I even close to understanding this???? Guest guest
Thanks Carolyn, like I said though 20 lbs for some of the exercises was almost too heavy but Chalene always says to lift until you fail. Since my arms were shaking, I guess that's what she wants. My arms are a little sore today but not too bad. I wasn't sure I would be able to bowl last night after lifting but I bowled pretty good two games. I bowled a 156 and a 162! My average is 139 so that was a good night for me. Maybe you need to start out lighter with your weights and build up slowly? Maybe you should go for shorter walks on the days you lift heavy. You will try CLX and next time I'm sure you will do fine. Thanks for your encouragement, I really NEED it! Guest guest
No, not to me. I'm not using my body weight to lift because the movement is so much slower than traditional weight lifting...so I don't understand how you can say that. That's sort of a back handed cut down to me! Guest guest
Oh come on Jen, you are WAY too sensitive! You get so offended by anything anymore. Why do I find that I have to bite my tongue ever so much as to not upset you????You're doing great. I said that. I did not, NOR DID I slam you in anyway. I'm just saying for a heavier person to lift said amount of weight, is going to be easier STRENGTH wise than for a smaller person. It's relative to their weight. If you took a heavier person's weight and did the math, you would find out that they are lifting x percent of their body weight. If you did the math with someone smaller, they would need to be lifting less in order to have the same challenge. Make sense?Darcy That's sort of a back handed cut down to me! Guest guest
I don't know if that's what she meant or not but in any case, I'm positive it wasn't meant to be an insult in any way. It is a simple fact that some people weigh more than others, whether it is fat or muscle that is making them weigh more, or simply being taller, it is just a fact, not an insult. If Darcy (or anyone) would have said to me that someone would have an advantage doing a certain exercise just because they have more height (are taller than) me that would be a simple fact, not a backhanded insult. The only reason I can see that I would take a comment like that as an insult would be if I were extremely sensitive about my height (or lack thereof). I'm not... so if anyone wants to talk about exercises that are really difficult or really easy for short people, feel free! ;-) For those newer to the board... I'm not quite 5' tall... I come in at 4'11 3/4" (and yeah, that 3/4" means a lot to me)! Guest guest
Ditto on the first part. I'm saying what I think at this point, WITHOUT intending to be nasty or fight with you, Jen. I'm stating my own feelings, which are just as important as yours. I find it difficult to have worthwhile discussions when I'm concerned anything I write will be misinterpreted as an insult and that I will be "called out" as a "mean" person with the insulted party assuming I meant something terrible, attacking me in their reply. I'd really prefer that if I've offended you or anyone else, that I be addressed in a respectful way, expecting the best from me instead of the worst, telling me what I've done, how you feel and giving me an opportunity to make amends instead of attacking me and leaving me with few options for respectful replies except to hit delete and ignore the comments. I do not intend to be nasty or a troublemaker with this post, nor have I ever done so before (though I'm sure I've been guilty of sarcasm from time to time but I don't think it was at any individual's expense and I apologize right now if it was). I'm quite positive Darcy isn't doing so either which is the main reason why I wanted to write this now. As for the explanation, Darcy, that makes sense to me. A person who weighs 1,000 pounds lifting 400 pounds would find it easier than a 500 pound person would to lift 400 pounds. I'm not implying it would necessarily be "easy" for a 1,000 lbs. person to lift 500 lbs. either but I can see how it would be less difficult for that person than it would be for the 400 lbs. person. Guest guest
Thank you . Yes, you explained it well. Yes, of course I didn't mean to " backhand Jen " . I was trying to help Carolyn out in her thoughts on why she wasn't lifting heavy. I am so opposite of Jen in regards to being sensitive, so I guess I'm really baffled as to how that remark could even be a little bit 'backhanded " at you Jen? I think it would have been much more rude of me to " bite my tongue " and let Carolyn think she's a wimp because she's not lifting as heavy as you... when I sit here thinking I know why she may not be?? Should someone else's feelings be put after your's? I can't see you believing that I shouldn't have said a word and let Carolyn think that w/out sharing my experience? I didn't think what I said was rude at all. No one's feeling deserve to be hurt, and I surely didn't intend that. Please try to lighten up. I don't mean that in a harsh way, I just know that there has been more than one occasion when you have issues with what someone has wrote, where the rest of us (safely assuming) don't see what you are saying. We all love you Jen, we want you to succeed. You need to put your dukes DOWN, and stop being so defensive. That's just what it seems to be you do a lot. You wait or look for someone to say anything that could be remotely against you or just taken wrong, and then pounce. If anyone says something that could be taken wrong in any way, it seems you do. Please lighten up, and let stuff go. No one is here to intentionally hurt you. We're all on the same side.... Darcy Ditto on the first part. Guest guest
Well said a.I am nearly 5'5. I have 2 of the Firms balls. I have the small pink one, and the larger green one. The pink one is REALLY small. Are you sure your ball is small enough?Darcy I can't do any of Chalene's Turbo Jam on the ball stuff because I'm too short. Which I find funny because Chalene is short. I'm 5'3 and I have the SHORT person ball. Maybe my legs are just funky. But seriously though folks, I know most of you don't know this but I've actually been a member of this group for years - I come and go because my job is 60 plus hours at times (I just got home from work)...but I have " left " before because people couldn't give advice or support without having to walk on glass. I was one of those people who got their butt chewed for trying to be supportive through emails to my own account. Exercise isn't easy and fitness is about body mechanics and mind mechanics. You have to look at everything, your mental state, your physical state, your will power, your motivation...everything and examine it under a harsh light. Why are you not where you want to be? Or for those who are fit, what is it going to take to improve? We are breaking down the most sensitive and personal areas of our lives...we have to. Without examining why we don't succeed or why we can't do a bicep curl at the same time as we lunge -we won't grow. We can't grow as a group in fitness unless we can feel free to have an open discussion about the physics of exercise (yes and it IS physics), the mental readiness of weight loss and the emotions (high and low) of the journey. You have to trust that others do have your best interests at heart and might be supportive if they weren't afraid to speak. Guest guest
That's exactly why I quit working out at gyms for good and tried videos at all. I tried so many times to make it work at gyms but never understood until recently why I didn't feel really safe on some of the machines. I felt terrible too for not being able to use them "correctly" and I could never remember what the trainer had told me to do with free weights during my one free session when I'd joined so I avoided those too. That's part of my join, go for a few months (if that long), quit thing that I did too many times. I'd feel more comfortable with the free weights now but have them at home so I don't need them there. I wouldn't mind some of the classes though, like you're doing Stacey. If I could find one that would just offer me access to the classes for super cheap I might do that! ;-) Re: Jen's exercise for Thursday 06/18/09 --I'm not... so if anyone wants to talk about exercises that are really difficult or really easy for short people, feel free! ;-)this is true! i'm a little under 5'4" and whenever i was working out at a gym i never felt i could get the machines adjusted to fit me. i like free weights sooo much better.stacey
Guest guest
Well I no longer have the small ball inflated since I just needed it for Turbo Jam. I couldn't use the Beachbody one for it. I had to buy the smallest ball Gaim made and it still didn't work well for me. I do wonder if I am built funny. It felt so awkward that I haven't tried those videos in forever. I use the normal ball for abs and the what not and do fine on it for just that and the small ball was too short for me to do abs. I also gave up because I didn't have room to have two inflated balls. I might try again soon, now that I have it on my mind ;-) I blow the ball up and measure the circumference. Thanks Darcy! :-) a > > > > > > --I'm not... so if anyone wants to talk about exercises that are really > > difficult or really easy for short people, feel free! ;-) > > > > > > this is true! i'm a little under 5'4 " and whenever i was working out at a > > gym i never felt i could get the machines adjusted to fit me. i like free > > weights sooo much better. > > > stacey > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
You know - it could be leg length or torso length that impacts how the ball feels for you. For instance, my DH is probably about 6 inches taller than me, but we have roughly the same leg length - all his height is in his torso. Guest guest
I think it is my leg length. I have child like legs and my hip dysplasia probably doesn't help. I never know if I'm doing it exactly right, I hate waiting for machines to become available, and lifting weights like that seems like... work to me *L* I need a sculpting class with loud music and a motivating instructor to get me to do it, or a personal trainer to force me to do it! > > That's exactly why I quit working out at gyms for good and tried videos at all.
