Guest guest
Thanks, but I need some clarification as I do not know what you mean by you don't cover the bottom of the round green tray, as I do not have one of these. Also, it sounded like the mung beans got to the top, without the weight (as you put on the weight later, then of course this further force the sprouts to get stronger and longer -- thus the explosion). The orginal growth befoer you put on the weight is the part that interested me. Looks like they are in complete darkness, perhaps other than when you rinse, and perhaps, there are holes at the bottom of your trays. BTW, I used the collandar, as suggested by ew, so I have holes at the bottom too. I cover them in a black fleece cloth for darkness. Do you think I suffocate the sprouts? > ** > > > > That's a good question. How many days? Maybe 4 or 5?? It's all in the > amount of beans I use. Guest guest
Oh, EW, remember my " problem " with sprouted lentils or lentils of any kind. I had tried sprouting them 4 times (no problem sprouting them, they came out just fine). But when I added them to my salads, EVERY TIME, well the next morning, to put it appropriately, I was not able to go to the bathroom as I would normally do. I tried this 4 times. Same result every time. As I am not the type of person who will let ANYTHING RUN MY LIFE, yesterday I looked at the newly sprouted lentils and announced. " It's all in my mind " , YOU WILL NOT AFFECT ME, YOU ARE FIBER " I had some in my dinner salad. Well, this morning, I am happy to report that I can now USE LENTILS. That's all I have to say on the subject. rofl. Melody > > EXPERIMENT! > > Re: Mung Beans Explosion > > EW: > > I used the E word?? Guest guest
Where do you find a dark place to put the mung beans or sunflower seeds? My closets are stuffed. I don't even have much of a counter top. Guest guest
Just cover them with a cloth. Anything other than direct light. Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestions. Just a towel over them would do okay. We even keep a light on over the stove and I have a clear sprouter and not a green one, but the alfalfa sprouts did really well. That idea about only one rinse a day did the trick.  Carolyn Wilkerson  ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, March 11, 2012 7:20 PM Subject: Re: Re: Mung Beans Explosion  I do two things. If I'm doing them in a jar or a EasySprout, I put them in the back of a drawer. If I am doing hem in a colander, I cover them with a very dark towel on the sink. Do you have a spot in a bathroom? Can they live in a bathtub between baths? Keeping them dark is the trick. ew Re: Re: Mung Beans Explosion Thanks, but I need some clarification as I do not know what you mean by you don't cover the bottom of the round green tray, as I do not have one of these. Guest guest
If I EVER put a sprouting tray inside my oven and closed the door, it would be next year that I would remember where I left it (or until I wanted to bake something). I can smell the burning sprouts now. lol Melody
Guest guest
Carolyn, Yes indeed, I only used a black fleece cloth. It is doing very well, just not the explosion like Melody's batch. What do you mean by " That idea about only one rinse a day did the trick. " Most people sprouting mung beans (on youtube) only want to have a quarter inch tail, saying that that is when the mung bean sprouts have the most nutrition. Not me, I would love to have very long sprouts, to stir fry in Asian dishes. Still want to figure out if it is because the type of seeds are different or that there are other trays stacking on top that makes the difference. I only use one colandar. Guest guest
I tried to sprout some alfalfa sprouts and they started to sprout out but died. So the next batch I rinsed oly once a day instead of twice a day as someone recommended and that worked fine. I have some fine sprouts. Have had on sandwiches for a couple of days now. Were delicious.
