Guest guest
I may be your mom's age, in the higher 60's, and the body doesn't cooperate all the time but my mind is willing to try some new things. I am in SE FL. I like the weather here, but the flowers and plans ae different. Tropical plants do the best. Bouganvilla is beautiful here. I do grow some vines with flowers butterflies like. We don't even have to water them as they do well in the natural environment. I had poinsettias year round one year but then a repairman walked all over them and didn't get more started. Have geraniums that have been here in a pot for a year now. My topsy turvey tomato planter did come up with some grape tomatoes but the regular size didn't do but 2 tomatoes and they didn't survive to get red. I am glad your Mom can have lettuces year round. Maybe you can suggest things for me to plant but I am going to get the small lettuce Tom Thumb. It is bout the size for a nice salad. Should microgreens be kept inside or can they be put in a pot outside? I like a variety of greens. Thanks. I feel sort of related since you have a Mom down here!!!! There is something on line about gardening in FL. Carolyn Wilkerson  ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, March 11, 2012 8:58 PM Subject: Re: 2nd batch of alfalfa worked. Ate first of it yesterday and again today. Now a mix?  My mom lives in SW Florida, and she never had much success with gardening either, but I now have her growing the tom thumbs and several other veggies. She does them year round now, keeping them on window sills, or on her porch. She has good results with leaf lettuces too. She didn't want to " bother " with aerogardens, although I convinced her they was no BOTHER involved. Old dog, new tricks-not happening, but she does enjoy her little patio garden, lol. > > My sprouter sure didn't come with much of anything. I did order a book but hasn't come yet. My old sprouter had some good directions but it went the way of the sprouter. I just used it awhile and then lost interest and no one but me eats sprouts. I hoped my husband would now but he won't so it will be only me again. Maybe I can give a few to a neighbor if she likes them. I think they are fantastic. They taste so fresh and good. I saw those microgreens and i think I have to order those. I am not sure i saw them on an organic seed place though. If I find microgreens at Burpee, will they be safe to sprout and eat? I may put them in a pie plate like the sunflowers and I'll see if that works. What about the grow sponges. Do they work well for something like microgreens?  I like spring greens and am thinking the microgreens would be sort of like spring greens. >  > I checked out the aerogarden and they are a bit on sale but not a great deal. I put them on a wish list. I liked the 66 tray that gets plants ready for outside. but it is confusing in FL as our big grrow season is the winter.  But I saw those Tom Thumb lettuces are supposed to like the heat okay. If I can just keep water on them I'll be okay. I am just in a mobile home park though so won't have much space. maybe 4 x 4 square foot garden or in containers which may be better. Summer is rainy season though so better be raised bed. I have never been much of a veggie farmer but i did well for some flowers once when I was younger and planting helped me through a divorce. That and repairing the house. > > Carolyn Wilkerson > > >  > > > ________________________________ > > To: sproutpeople > Sent: Sunday, March 11, 2012 7:15 PM > Subject: Re: 2nd batch of alfalfa worked. Guest guest
, is she only growing inside? I think the FL  is the biggest strawberry grower in the US. And pehaps tomatoes too. I might have to hold onto some seeds for September to grow in the fall. It isn't the heat, but the heavy water and then no water. Might be cooler on your mom's coast than here on Atlantic. We do get a breeze most of the time. We are only about 3 miles from the ocean, as the bird flies and the wind blows. I will be able to grow a few things inside now with the aerogarden, I hope.  Carolyn Wilkerson  ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, March 11, 2012 9:39 PM Subject: Re: 2nd batch of alfalfa worked. Ate first of it yesterday and again today. Now a mix?  My mom is 77-just started gardening a few years ago, and loves it! She had given up trying to deal with the heat down there, until I was there over a summer and showed her how to do it. She has all sorts of things on the go now. Microgreens do great inside on a kitchen counter-no need to put them outside. > > > > Carolyn Wilkerson > > > > > >  > > > > > > ________________________________ > > From: Ernest Willingham <99tomatoes@> > > To: sproutpeople > > Sent: Sunday, March 11, 2012 7:15 PM > > Subject: Re: 2nd batch of alfalfa worked.
