Guest guest
I thought I posted this, but don't see it, so will post again. Am using the SproutGarden, and had a mix in of radish and French Garden. This morning is day 3 - there are spots of white fuzz on them! I tossed them, washed the containers with hot, soapy water, sprayed them with vinegar and rinsed. Started again but separated the radish and French Garden in their own trays. What was the fuzz and how can I prevent it from happening again? Thanks for your input
Guest guest
Well, it's hard to say. They might be mold, they might also be root hairs that needed a drink. The way I tell them apart is by lifting carefully from the bottom and smell them. YOU'LL KNOW!!!! You did the right thing. Make sure when you drain them you drain them COMPLETELY. That's the key thing to remember. I'm sure you did everything right. It happens. Especially in hot weather. Take care, Melody > > I thought I posted this, but don't see it, so will post again. Guest guest
sorry - computer crashed the internet. UPDATE - I separated ther radish from the French Garden seeds - day 3 now and the radish only has the fuzz. With reading glasses on (hah) they appear to be root hairs and disappear upon rinsing. No odor. Is it possible they need more than 2 rinses per day? I never noticed any before with just the French Garden, but there are very few radish seeds in that. > > > > > > I thought I posted this, but don't see it, so will post again. Guest guest
I always had root hairs with my French Garden mix, didn't separate it out to which seed. The mix was fine. Guest guest
BJ,  You will likely get this same phenomenon with broccoli seeds. It was with those that I first saw this. A stream of water laid those hairs down right on the stem, and I couldn't wipe them off with my finger. So I knew it wasn't mold. But the smell test will definitely tell you which is which!  Peggy To: sproutpeople Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 4:15 PM Subject: Re: Re: HELP!! Guest guest
Root hairs are normal on the brassica sprouts so I wouldn't be concerned. Also-they are generally high in sulfur content so you might get a slightly pungent scent from them even when initially soaking the seeds. I don't think they need any more water than normal-although in the summer it's not a bad idea to rinse more often. My favorite mixes are the brassica mixes w/ radish, mustard, cabbage, and broccoli....great stuff! Re: HELP!! White fuzz > > > > I thought I posted this, but don't see it, so will post again.
