Guest guest
Thanks Jeanne. 2 more questions if you don't mind. How is your son's ocd atypical? And how would I know if dd has ts? She went for an assessment with psychologist who said she had ocd. TS not mentioned. But perhaps if I had specifically asked her to be tested for TS??? How does it usually work? Does anyone else have an ocd child who doesn't have TS, yet makes little noises as part of the ocd? Mo

Guest guest
Mo, My daughters TS got worse gradually but we still thought it was just some type of allergy thing. She also CONSTANTLY sniffs, but she was/is stuffed up alot so we thought it was kind of a habit she got into. Her eye blinking has gone from blinking alot to HARD blinking were she blinks and her eyes stay closed a few seconds. Her diagnosis of TS was during the summer when THANK GOD we had enough sence to secretly videotape her behavior. We were watching TV and for over an hour she was doing facial contortions (grimacing as we now call it), her face, neck, arms and hands would tense up HORRIBLY. To make a long story short we ended up at a neurologist, he saw the tape and immediately said it's TS. At this point she's not on meds for the TS, but is for the OCD which she was diagnosed for after theTS, as we've been warned the side effects of TS meds can be bad. Her TICS have calmed down while at school to the sniffing & blinking, at home she says they are the worst when she's doing homework. She doesn't make her throat noise anymore, at least for now! Her TS has come in second to her OCD symptoms but I'm hoping they are not getting worse again. Sandi Re: Re: Tourette's > > At first, it was a tiny whine in her throat. Guest guest
.... So if the little voice of OCD is telling your daughter, " If you don't breathe loudly, you might stop breathing and you'll die, so you'd better huff, " then she could use the CBT techniques to boss back the OCD and refuse to huff. It would be hard, but she could be successful. After an initial build up of anxiety, the longer she refrained from huffing the easier it would be. It it's a tic, she can also refuse to huff, but it would get progressively harder until she couldn't hold off anymore. (The amount of time this would work varies greatly from one individual to another). > Jeanne -------- Dear Jeanne, Suppose you can't boss back an underlying anxiety? instead of an action. If I suggest that my son tell himself (or 'boss back') the tic it doesn't make sense to him. He would have to boss back the thought, the anxiety. He says he can't. So it stands to reason that one would want to alleviate the anxiety. With supplements. No? Talking with him does not seem to help. What do you think? Guest guest
My daughter was diagnosed with ad/hd, ocd, bi-polar, etc. Everything but autism. Her twin brother however has autism. After starting on Concerta, Tourette's became an even bigger problem. We went through several medications and the Tourettes got even worse. I was considering taking her out of school. Out of frustration I took her off all meds (5th grade) and the Tourettes slowly went away (couple of months). She still has social skills issues, but takes no meds, is not teased at school and is a straight A freshman in high school. I do not have any suggestions. Every child is different. Just wanted to share my experience with you because I understand and have great compassion for your dilemma. Rosemary Banks > > > Hi! I'm new here and am wondering if anyone has a child with Tourette's in addition to the autism? My 14yo son has both (along with ADHD, OCD and some type of seizure/rage disorder). His behavior has been pretty well controlled and he has been pretty stable but in the past couple of weeks his tics have become worse and worse. Now, he is almost constantly ticking. I feel really sorry for him because the most recent tic involves a combination of making a noise and jumping up and down. Sometimes it is almost non-stop and really bothers him. He even has trouble relaxing and falling asleep at night because he can't stop jumping-even when sitting. I'm wondering if anyone has any good ideas for how to help him witht he tics. His doctor said the tic medicine was almost at its highest level and I really don't want to mess with the mix of meds because he is doing so well in all other respects. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > _________________________________________________________________ > Windows Live™ Hotmail®:…more than just e-mail. > http://windowslive.com/online/hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_more_042009 >

Guest guest
Thanks Lois! My son takes klonopin, tenex, zyprexa and trileptal. Over the years we have gone through phases where doctor's keep adding meds to his "cocktail" for various reasons. Last fall, he was in an inpatient medical/residential program and the got him off of most of the medication and he has been functioning at a better level than he has for years. So, I'm really scared to change any of the meds because I don't want to throw things off and have them start to spiral out of control again. But, he is constantly jumping and making noises and I know it's really bothering him and I think he notices everyone else looking at him too. Guest guest
, WOW! That is alot of meds! J takes zpraxa (5mg) but that is all. You have to watch the anti-phicotic (sp)? meds as they can cause Tourette like symtoms. J use to take resperdal for behaviours and it helped for a while BUT He got a tic and we took him off of it and he slowly lost the tic. I was worried about the zpraxa but he only takes a small dose and seems to do ok on it. I would watch taking all those meds together. How old is your son? Guest guest
Lois, My son is 14. Believe it or not-the 4 meds he takes are a huge reduction from what he was taking before his inpatient treatment. He was on 11 meds then. His behaviors had been so challenging that drs just kept adding to them without subtracting thinking that if they took away any meds it would be even worse. Instead, I think they made his behavior much worse by completely over medicating him. I called the dr this morning and we'll see what he says. My son takes 15mg of Zyprexa up from 10 a few months ago. Maybe we can go back to the 10 and be ok. Guest guest
Hi , My son is 18, has been Autistic since 18 months and has recently , in the last 2 years developed some sort of tic disorder, Tardive Dyskinesia, Tourettes, PANDAS...whatever...but they have been pretty severe at times, almost constant interrupting his sleep. There have been nights when he gets no sleep at all bc he starts twitching and tic-ing. It helps if I lay next to him with my arm over him. Do you find that he can stop the tic if you touch him? This seems to be the case with my son, although at times I must push with all my strength to help him to close his mouth or get back into an upright position. Sad thing is his teacher is convinced that he is doing it for attention...because he come to them...I said he can feel them coming on like a sneeze and maybe he wants yo to help him control it(he has no speech). Anyway I am in the process of reading a book that I mentioned on here last week, Natural Treatment for Tourettes and Tic Disorders/Sheila . It is good, gives possible triggers, etc. I am also detoxing my son with detox drops which seems to helping quite a bit, as well as Magnesium and other neuro-calming supplements . I don't know if you are aware that risperdal and other such drugs can actually CAUSE tics...I looked up Risperdal after my son developed tics after being on it and found that Tics(tardive Dyskinesia) can be a side effect of Risperdal, etc. Please feel free to email me...we are in this together, and need all the help and support we can get. Guest guest
, J is 21. Once in a while if he is having anxiety I will give him a small dose of Aitvin but That sounds awful that they had him on all those meds. The poor child! I think I would be acting like that myself if I took that many meds. ((HUGS)) Lois RE: Tourette's
